This is taken from sample essays from Insight. BTW, this is a High scoring essay.

Part 2- Topic 3

'A Man for All Seasons demonstrates that every man does not have his price'

Here are the topic sentences for the body paragraphs.

1. Rich and Cromwell embody the notion that any person can be 'bought' with an appropruate reward, though both acknowledge that a degree of suffering might well be needed to bring about compliance.

2. Other characters are easily 'bought', but their allegiance to various ideals is shown to be flexible when certain offers are made.

3. More, in contrast, cannot be 'bought' with money or goods; what he finds irresistible is the idea that he can maintain the integrity of his self and the goodness of his soul.

I still am of the opinion that topic sentences can include characters names even for a part 2 question, but they should focus on the theme or idea relating to that character, not just saying "Rich is an example that every man has his price".

LOOOLLL AND JUST FOUND THIS IN THE OVERALL ASSESSMENT BIT!!!

Structure: The essay has a logical structure. The introduction presents a clear response to the question and outlines key discussion terms. The body paragrapghs each discuss a main point of the argument, and the conclusion summarises the argument well.

Edit: It's also good to note that all four of the part 4 essays in this book have character names in the topic sentences :)

Well like I said, I've been told many times specifically not to do it (since I used to myself and I got a 4/10 from my tutor because of it the first time =X), so I dunno wth happened there but ok. And still, the essays you buy in bookshops tend to be pretty crap as I'm sure you've realised, even the high scoring ones. But its probably just one of those personal preference things I imagine...plenty of those in structuring English essays, such as what to put in a language analysis intro etc. And I imagine that examiners don't take into account such personal preferences when marking, since it's obviously way too unfair, and just mark according to whether it makes logical sense or not.

I might just add that my old English teacher also told us to not use character names in a theme-based essay Q. But as long as it makes sense and flows well I don't see why you couldn't :)

Yeh, I think it is also the way that you use the characters. The main thing is not to make the essay a part 1 essay if that makes sense. You can use characters IMO as long as it focuses on the ideas and arguments that are brought up in relation to that character.
