help on double degree of commerce/engineering
« on: December 20, 2008, 09:05:17 pm »
hi guys i'm new here asking for a bit of guidance on my course selection so yeah help will be much appreciated.

i've been considering a double degree for a while now as i don't really know what i wanna do in uni and all. i've always been interested in commerce, accounting especially but i don't really know what to expect or whether i'll like it or not. also i decided i should have a go at engineering since the subjects i did in year 12 are mostly sciences and maths ( yes i'm asian ).

so here's my problem, i think 5 years in uni is a tad too long for me and i wish to start working earlier, so i'll most likely drop either of the degrees depending on how they go, assuming of course this is possible ( i've heard it is but i dunno ). my question is this, will i be required spend more time on my single degree as compared to taking a single degree from the get go ? if so, how much longer should i expect ? also any help on the workload, potential and benefits will be highly appreciated. thanks in advance xD

Double degrees offer you more flexibility when you graduate, but as you highlighted, this means you'll have to be at uni for an extra couple of years. When it comes to workload, its still the same whether you do a single or double degree. Also, engineering is a very broad field, what aspect(s) of engineering interest you?

Hmmm... Well what you could do is do a general business degree, as you are given one year to decide what you want to major in, whether it's accounting, marketing, hospitality, tourism, etc. Well um as for the engineering thing, you could always do a double degree of comm/eng? Since you don't know which one you'll like... you could always transfer the year after to a single degree, if you find you don't like commerce or engineering.

Good luck, hope that helps a little >_<

um.... i don't really know which field to major in yet but since the first year is just general stuff (i think) i'll decide on the major later. i'm thinking of transferring to a single degree (can be either depending on what i end up liking ) after a year of doing the double degree, but i don't know if this means that i'll have to spend longer than usual doing that single degree since from what i understand you attempt less subjects in a double degree.

With a double degree, you usually have less room for electives, but you still do all the core subjects that are required for that particular degree.

Yeah, so you wont really fall behind...
As for the introductory units [commerce-based]... they usually give you a bit of an insight into the various majors... Helped me realise that accounting was the right major for me. :) [Although I'm completing a bachelor of business not commerce, but i'd assume they're the same]
