optus, pre-paid wireless broadband

yes, its convenient

no, its not easy [not as it sounds]

the instruction booklet was absolutely no use

the registration process is completely idiotic

you are asked to produce IDs, codes and numbers you do not know of

the "helpful information" are written in such a way full of jargon you cannot decipher unless 1) you are an optus whore, 2) you work there or 3) God exists and helps you directly

the customer service [our "free technical support", call us any time!] line is ALWAYS busy, waits for about 40 minutes to get a line while you learn how to hum the exact tune of the waiting message and recite the words of the recorded "sorry to keep you waiting, we'll be with you shortly" message to the exact microsecond after hearing it 30 gazillion times. you'd think this delay is because operators spend time with the customer? think again! because as soon as you connect, they find excuses to put you on hold again, and after another 10 minutes and "thank you for waiting" [add Indian accent here], they "help" you with jargon-filled terms, give irrelevant information, and when you repeat yourself because they have misunderstood you, they hang up as you are talking. This gets better because you cannot call back [who can be bothered to wait 40 minutes to lodge a complaint?], nor do you EVER want to call them again.

so, here's some helpful hints if you want to get this new exciting package:

1) register it in the shop with a shop assistant. try monday morning about 9 in a local shopping centre when NO ONE is around and the shop has just opened

2) when the information says "please wait for 30 minutes", it really means "times 10, add a hundred, times 10 again, then add a bit more, and you'll be almost half way there"

3) don't even BOTHER with customer support, doesn't matter how free it is

4) wait up to 9 hours for the timely balance check. I've read from optus that this will be delivered "shortly". Either all optus employees are incredibly blessed and their "short" is in fact extremely "long", or we're moving through the dimension of time at different speeds

5) don't expect it to work. then you might be pleasantly surprised, or at least not disappointed

and here's some facts about it:

1) yes, its broadband, but you get a mobile number with it.

2) disregard registration step 8 onwards, you'd rather not know.

3) if you'd like to, please do this on a business day at 9AM first thing in the morning. make sure the computer you are using already have Internet. Make sure you do not need to do any work that day, because you will not get a chance to. Make sure that you have a punching bag near by, because trust me, you'll need it.
If you can finish it before end of business that day, expect me to hunt you down to the end of the Earth and admire you forever.

4) don't get antsy if your "balance" message to "9999" doesn't bounce back soon. don't think if you send two it'll help your chances of getting it. don't think sending one at a particular time of day will mean you will actually get it on that day. don't ask for this when you actually need to know [because you will not find out until too late]

endnote: I am yet to try the "recharge" option. I don't plan to find out either. If "practice makes perfect", then I think I can probably get the hang of registering a new sim if I have to do it every 30 days...
If I do gather enough courage to recharge... hmm... be sure to hear another episode from me yet.

[/rant]
hopefully this settles the anxiety if anyone else is going through the same thing.

simply put: the problem WON'T be solved.

Why do you want wireless broadband anyway, right now?

Do you carry your notebook around with you? Well anyways, go with 3. If I had to select one, I'd definitely would go with 3. I mean 6GB for $39, how good is that?! xD

i *have* wireless broadband right now...

my current conditions prevent me from obtaining a DSL broadband
the remoteness of my current location also prevents me from using any other service providers except for Optus and Telstra
and my underaged'ness prevents me from signing any contracts

sooo... :P

You could get mobile internet through a provider like Vodafone/3 which is far cheaper than Optus. You can then use your mobile as a modem and my experience of this has been seamless (except you'd need to keep your phone on the charger as it drains batteries like no tomorrow).

Mobile internet is very good in circumstances like mine. I do live in Melbourne but at the end of the year there is a decent chance I'll be going back to Mildura for the Summer holidays, meaning signing a contract for standard DSL through a land line is a waste of time completely.
I went with Vodafone by the way. 5GB for $39, and I can use it back in Mildura. :)

Extra note: The other day I got the shock of my life with some extraordinary speeds for this service compared with the normal.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
whatever you do, don't switch to TPG
http://www.tpg.com.au/forum/index.php?sid=6963d52aac4a19ef9257c517bd075520
just look at how many complaints there are about speed and dropping out

I'm with TPG now and it's shaved several years off my life from pure frustration

TPG by far has the best value plans. However it is worst customer service and the actual service i've seen. As nina said, many TPG customers are facing dropouts and speed issues (lol even 500metres to the DSLAM).

TPG is the true contrast to telstra, in both cost and service :P

You don't get much service from Bigpuddle, either.
