Dear students,

We are writing to introduce the upcoming British Parliamentary Debating Competition to you.
For the last four years we have run this competition very successfully. This year, the program will be split into two divisions: a junior division for students in years 7-9 and a senior division for students in year 10-12.

Each division will run over one Sunday in October and will include full training in this debating style as well as three debates and a Grand Final. There will also be morning tea and lunch for all participants.

British Parliamentary debating is a dynamic and entertaining style involving four teams of two speakers in each debate. Speakers also have the chance to offer each other questions during speeches, helping them to learn to think on their feet. The senior competition will be open to any students who have competed in A, B or C Grade of the DAV Schools Competition. Teams must have at least two members, who can be from different year levels. Schools are welcome to have more than two speakers in a team if necessary, but no more than three speakers will be allowed in the preparation for each debate.

The senior division of the competition will be held at Melbourne High School, and will run from 9:00AM to 4:30PM on Sunday, October 18th. The Grand Final will be held at the offices of the Debaters Association of Victoria on Wednesday, October 28th at 6pm. All debates will be secret topics, with 30 minutes preparation time, and speaking times of 4-5 minutes for junior students and 5-6 minutes for senior students.

The cost of the entry is $80 per team. There may be a cap placed on the number of teams, so please register early. We are happy to accept combined teams, so if there is only one student from your school interested in participating, please feel free to contact us.
