  No, not that kind...

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Life Coaches, Hypnotherapists, Psychiatrists and the like. Are any particularly suited to particular problems/cases?
I'm not quite sure whether to go in for some advice-based coaching [usually costing $100-$300hr] or a something more clinical, [costing up to 3 times as much.]

I was thinking, if something really helps me, that would be great, but then, as an economist would say, if I pay one of the of people I'm merely investing into a *probability* that I might benefit, so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

you don't have to say specifics...

Oh, just bored [as opposed to being acutely depressed]. Do very little; sometimes composing a reply on a comment thread or doing some [relatively] light reading is the most I get up to on a typical day.

I would see a doctor first, or your school/university counsellor. They will be able to give you better advice in a confidential setting than you will ever be able to get here. They're also generally free.

It means that you'll be able to claim some of it back via Medicare.

Just in regards to psychologists:

See your doctor to get a referral. Medicare will bear the brunt of your first 10 sessions if you have been referred by a GP. The gap fee (the difference between what the psychologist charges and what Medicare will pay) is generally only $15 or $20 per session (a lot cheaper than $100!).

Expected benefit = probability of success * benefit of success

But expected benefit might not necessarily be the "benefit of the risky package" (this is called the expected utility theory)

Mate, I think you have a lot of potential, and I'm not sure why you need advice-based counselling. I'd like to hear what you do gain from it though -- keep in touch, if you'd like to.

It might be that university is not for you, and that you're made out for something better? Tread your own path!

Make sure that your adviser has actually done amazing things that you want to do (if it's advice/inspiration you're looking for). Not just some B-grade psychologist? I'm not 100% sure what your goals are, so this might be a mis-prescription.
