Be careful or you'll end up like me.  Living on two hours sleep a night, driving through red lights and throwing up outside the Chemistry building.  Read: I feel ur pain.

I was driving a friend home last weekend and I ran a red light in Camberwell...he said I should have stopped and I attempted to deny that the light was red. I shouldn't have a license :S

Psych says teenagers need 9-10.

Adults however only need 7 apparently. It's the amount associated with the best health outcomes according to some studies... Any less than 6 leads to exponentially worse outcomes (mostly in regards to heart attacks and such, but through other means as well), and same goes for anything more than 10. Frequent naps greater than 20 minutes during the daytime do the same.

i reckon it just depends on the individual really... whether you need 7 or 10 hours of sleep...i think you would know whether you feel like you've had enough sleep or not

Yeh, but needing less or especially more may indicate an underlying and potentially solvable problem.

well maybe if its like extreme values but those studies prob take an average or median of a large cohort with various need for sleep
so like if you need 10 hrs a day sleep everyday i wouldn't say you have an underlying problem

It'd depend on the age. Depending on that, it may some something worth further investigating such as through a Sleep Study of some sort.

Well yeh, the key word there is 'may'. I'm not saying it's automatically abnormal or pathological, but in the chance that it is, it makes a big difference to the person's life if they fix it up. Not many people have the luxury of achieving 10 hours sleep on a daily basis so these people often end up chronically fatigued.

Adults need 8 according to Psych.

@Truelight: The individual doesn't know if they need more sleep or not as they 'adjust' to it and do not realise they are living a lower-quality life than someone who sleeps the specified amounts. You may feel perfectly fine (to yourself) but another person who gets more sleep is living at a better standard. Liken it to a person who doesn't know they need glasses until they get an eye-test; they think their vision is perfectly normal until they go see the opto and be told that it's -2.25.
