Is there anyway to convert a scanner / printer into a fax machine?
I doubt it - unless it's already got fax functionality built in. You can get those all-in-one printers that can photocopy, scan, fax.

I think you've got a misunderstanding about what a fax machine is. It's better to think of a fax machine as a communication device (like a telephone). Fax machines make use of telephone lines - hence you need a fax-capable modem to be able to convert the data into the appropriate signal type.

To convert a printer into a fax machine, you'd need a modem chipset and all that jive. You might be able to find a fax machine that just has an input for a scanner and an output for a printer. Most of them take hardcopy paper input though.

how do i set up a fax machine?
Usually just plug into the power, plug into the telephone line socket (you might want to invest in a filter if you want to use internet/telephone/fax simultaneously).

It's probably not worth investing in a fax machine unless you're going to be using it on a regular basis throughout the year (like a weekly basis would probably justify your cost). You're better off going to officeworks or some place like that and just fax your documents there. Local library might provide a faxing service as well.

If it's an education related document, you could probably get your school to fax it for you.

There's internet fax services, where you can fax digital documents to a physical fax machine - I've never used one of those so I don't know any good ones.
