How many?

Hey guys,

Just wanted to see if anyone could answer this. When I went to Melbourne's open day, i was told that 90 students from bachelor of science were able to continue through to medicine.

Is there somewhere that shows the number that get in from science and biomedicine? And the number that applied from each course?

Thanks

They had a 1000 applicants, interviewed 500 this year.
Approximately half the current first year cohort came from UoM, of which 66% were from biomedicine and 33% were from science. So that works out closer to 50 science students but my numbers are based on memory which could well be faulty

Do you think there is a reason for this, that there is this difference between both? Of course the university says they are both equal, but is there an advantage in doing biomedicine to science, strictly for the GAMSAT? Or does it come down to your ability in english and amount of basic revision completed in physics/chemistry/biology?

There is definitely no advantage in being in biomedicine as opposed to science. From Russ' stats it can be easy to come to the speculation. One can speculate that Biomed is tailored to getting kids into med, but one can select subjects in science to tailor themselves into the pathway of getting into med also. At the end of the day it just depends on the individuals GPA, GAMSAT and interview score and how they are ranked (and there are no extra browny points for being in biomed). It just happens that more biomed students were ranked higher than science students.

Or maybe biomed will always be higher because they study heaps and don't know how to have a good time like us kids in Science. hahaha Jokes :P

It's mostly that of the students in biomedicine, the majority want to go on to the MD, which produces a pretty big bias in application numbers (my graduating class this year is 371). You don't get bonus points, the only practical advantage I can see is that you don't have to compete for quota restricted subjects.

Enter science. I would say its easier to get a higher GPA... For example, In first year biomed students complete a whole year of Chemistry in one semester. Whilst science students, go through the chemistry content in two semester.

Its up to you, Biomed you have a cohort that studies harder and have higher expectation and ATAR scores.

I thought Chemistry for Biomedicine didn't go through certain topics in as much detail as they did in Chemistry 1/2. Doubt they squeezed everything learnt in Chemistry 1/2 into one semester.

They probably don't go through the stupid parts, like QM.  De Broglie load of crap.

They also didn't go through any of that thermodynamics stuff that we did.

All the parts I lose marks on, ie, would have a higher GPA in Biomed.
But then maths, so nah.

Nah, they make us do debroglie, QM and thermo in Physics instead...  which actually isn't that bad compared to kinematics. :/

OK BUT REMEMBER I still suffered through Physics too.

So I had like... 3 x 120 hours of time commitment dedicated to ridiculousness compared to 2 x 120.

Are you doing optics because my friend said she didn't cover optics in Phys for Bmed and I thought that was straaange.

You guys may have 'suffered' through physics, but I suffered dearly from biology... How on earth does anyone remember all that stuff? Physics was just being able to identify which formula was required for a given set of information (i did physics 1 and 2). Biology on the other hand... >_>
