without unit 1&2

I have the essential mathematical methods text book 1&2, what are the chapters that are built upon by units 3&4? Also what chapters can I leap straight into to see whether or not I can handle them, that being of the unit 3&4 text?

I'm getting a lot of contradictory responses to whether this is possible, ranging from "do it man, don't even need previous work" to "it's fucking impossible without."
