HELP - DNA replication

Is DNA replicated from 3' --> 5' or the other way around? I am getting different opinions from different textbooks/handouts

no. new strands of DNA are synthesisied from a 5 to 3 prime direction

The confusion comes from the fact that the template strand is read 3' to 5'

The template/original strand is read in the 3' to 5' direction of the original stand
The new strand is synthesised in the 5' to 3' direction of the original strand.

Is this the same for ALL nucleic acid replicating (i.e. transcription as well)??
