I studied it and found it fairly mediocre.  Some people love it though, go figure.

i thought it was boring the first time i read it, but after reading it multiple of times throughout the year i gradually learnt to appreciate ernest hemingway and the way he uses literary symbols and unique writing style to develop the book.

don't worry about it, after a few discussions in class i think you'll be able to find the book a little more interesting, develop deeper ideas and identify the many layers that the writer inserts in the novel.

this book has become one of my favourites after doing it in vce.

It is draining at first, but I agree with xdecay - you really learn to appreciate all the ideas and themes the underlie the entire text. The seemingly monotonous style of writing is actually purposeful and incredibly clever once you get a grip of it and discuss it in class.

Hang in there! It's definitely a superb text to study, analyse and write about. It was probably my favourite English text.

I couldn't agree more with Pixon, upon first reading it was ridiculously tedious and almost laborious to read ..... but whilst reading it the second time around I gained a greater sense of appreciation for the characters and their behaviour e.g. Rinaldi - how his attitude somewhat acts as a blanket from the vicissitudes he's facing, oh and of course who could forget the priest a rather mature and very interesting character indeed.

But this is only my 2 cents and well I haven't fully analysed it but hopefully the text will promote interesting discussions in class of course.
