Why are the elements nitrogen and sulfur included in lawn food?

This is a chemistry questions but apparently the answer involves some bio in it? If anyone can help it would be much appreciated! :)

Really, it all comes down to the fact that sulfur and nitrogen are both essential nutrients for plant growth. They are both used in the production of proteins and are important for the growth and repair of plants. They are therefore added to lawn fertiliser particularly nitrogen because it is often lacking in the soil due to the large amounts that plants use.

That should be a sufficient enough explanation. Hope I helped =D
