I swear there was a thread on this already, but as i cannot find it I shall ask again.

Im looking to get a laptop for uni, don't wanna spend much at all,
just looking for:
- Lightweight (as light as possible)
- Long battery life
- <$500~

honestly do not care about anything else at all. eg. if its ugly etc
not getting a mac, though. (although i dont think they come that cheap anyway)

any suggestions?

Get a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E320, you can buy it online. It's $499, and has a decent processor and RAM, however the graphics card is basic Intel HD Graphics.

I've got the Samsung rv520 which is pretty good/not too heavy for a 15.6" laptop/and good battery life compared to my old Toshiba one - I know toshiba laptops overheat pretty quickly; not sure if the same goes for their netbooks...

May I slightly diverge this thread and bring in tablets as an option?
I'm in year 12 and interested in a civil engineering course, and I was wondering what you actually need laptops/computers for? I'm considering buying a 10" tablet with attachable keyboard rather than a full fledged laptop.

Of course if uni courses require heavy processing etc i'd get a laptop, but if its just note taking would it be suitable to use a tablet in class, or god forbid, paper and a pen.

I used pen and paper for 3 years, only switched to a laptop this year because my workload trebled and I couldn't keep up without one.
Engineering you can use pen and paper, as long as you have access to a PC for MATLAB or Minitab or whatever the current software is that they use.
