hey guys would there would be much of a difference in teaching quality between Go8 uni and non-Go8 uni...say deakin?

there are bad lecturer's at every uni right?

Also, to someone who has actually transferred between a non-Go8 to a Go8 uni...did you notice a difference apart from the quality of students between the unis?

What is the biggest selling point for somebody to study at a Go8 uni at undergrad level, apart from this idea that Go8 unis carry more prestige?

I think it really depends on the field you're going into.

I.e. the nature of Medicine means it doesn't really matter which Uni you go to if you get a CSP place, as your internship is guaranteed and it just comes down to exam/career performance to get a speciality. Another field is Architecture - RMIT is known as one of the best University's if you want to peruse that kind of career. On the other hand, something like Law, which is a very "elitist" profession, means that if you do not go to a Go8 uni it'll simply be a disadvantage you have to make up for somewhere else in your resume.

Do you know what course you want to do?

There's a bias in some professions. If you're doing law, commerce or eng., the top firms will tend to pick the best students in that field from the GO8 unis. But really, uni bias only goes to a certain extent. Firms obviously aren't gonna say 'ur from Monash / Melb., i'm gonna hire u.' There's always other factors such as uni marks, leadership, work experience, club participations, personality etc.

The important thing, just as teewreck has said, is to try get into the best uni in the field u want. Example, say you want engineering, go to Monash or Melbourne, whichever one is closer. Good luck  :D.

Yes, every uni has its fair share of crappy lecturers and lazy tutors. From what I've heard there's no difference. At Melb/Monash you might get teachers with more respected qualifications and research, but they might lack people skills and be unapproachable. Yes I'm generalising but if you look at the surveys about student satisfaction the non Go8 Uni's tend to rank higher.

Honestly I think university preferences come down to two things; location and what career path you're after. If you need an elite uni to match your elite profession then go for it. But don't go through Melbourne's stupid Model or travel 3 hours to get to Monash just to study IT.

i'd say definitely yes. Given that there is still a tiny bit (only a bit!) of discrimination between the different go8 unis, when you compare go8 with non-go8, i'm sure there will be differences, but like people've said, it depends on which course specifically
