Choosing an area of medicine

As I'm becoming more sure of a career in medicine, how do you start to make a decision on what area of medicine (or what specialty) to pursue? Please feel free to share your own personal experiences, because I don't have much of an idea of what I want to do.

I honestly have no idea what I want to be later on. I kinda like the idea of dermatology atm (only because I hope to cure a member of my family!), but I honestly have no clue.

I have a friend who did med in the US who wanted to be a cardiothoracic (did I spell that right?) surgeon his whole life.

He did his internships or med-school placements or whatever they are and found he really liked helping sick kids, and is now focusing on pediatrics.

Medicine is an interesting career. They are many fields out there brother, just keep researching till the end year 12 or the end of 2013, I must say ;) and you might in a place where you've always to desired to be in (in the near distant future, of course!) :)

People often come into Med with ideas of what they want to be, but these quickly change. My experience, and that of many is that you'll come in with some ideas, but then you'll work through all the different fields and you'll start to realise that 'hey, doing this wouldn't be so bad'. I'm finding that rather than narrowing down my options as I thought I would, they more or less keep opening up. Most fields of Medicine are quite interesting, and it's really a case of seeing how you mature as a doctor throughout your undergraduate studies, and even your post-graduate studies. Then, it's best to match up your personality with the 'personality' of each speciality. Just talk to a lot of people and you'll slowly start to figure out. Really, most people only really narrow down solidly after they graduate so don't fret now. You don't need to make any immediate decisions and its best to keep an open mind. I've got people in my year level who are utterly intent on a certain path and are hence dismissive of the other sides of Medicine as a consequence. There's one person who despite being on psychiatry would just skip his duties there and go to theatre to watch surgeries since that's what he wants to eventually do. I don't think this is a healthy way to approach your undergraduate education so basically, just chill and experience everything you can.

I guess the problem with me is that I'm also considering Dentistry as well as mainstream medicine... It's going to be a bit of a mess if I change my mind if I make a choice... :S

dw, at this stage in 2011, I was set on being an actuary. Changed to Med, then changed to chemical engineering after UMAT and spesh SACs, then changed back to med.

Life's confusing at times (not that I've got a whole lot of experience!), just ride the wave for now :)

Based on your grad year, you have until 2018 before you need to start worrying about that

Do you really want to be looking into people's mouths for the rest of your life? :P

Why Med over Actuary? Just curious

Ultimately decided by my confidence in the spesh course. I wasn't confident enough (and that was reflected in my eventual SS).
