A potometer is a device that is used for measuring water uptake. As the plant takes up water, the level in the pipette falls. This water loss can be measured over time to yield the rate of transpiration. Does that mean the higher the water level the higher the rate of transpiration?

also are people discussing rate of transpiration or water level of potometer, i emailed bio staff lady and she replied saying:

That is entirely up to you - both are valid

Cheers, Lisa

thanks,

Yes that is basically it - the greater the water level fell, the greater the rate of transpiration. Did you make sure you filled the pipette to 0? If not, did you make sure about your calculations about the amount the water fell?

Discussing the rate of transpiration requires you to know the water level of the potometer. If you didn't know this, how could state well... anything? You wouldn't know which of the conditions had the greatest impact on transpiration to discuss its rate. So yeah....

yeah we had data on the water level then i plot this on a graph of time vs. water level and the gradient of the graph would tell the rate. The steeper the gradient the faster the rate so i used this to compare. I just wasn't sure about the potometer but thanks for clarifying :)

Hey what are you going to write in your hypothesis? Just about how the environmental factors affect the rate of transpiration or about the potometer, or both? :P

I already handed my in on Friday i'm in group A, I wrote mine on the rate of transpiration and didn't really talk about the water level in the potometer

Like I said before - the water level corresponds to the rate of transpiration. So by just mentioning the rate alone is essentially talking about both.
