GAT - Writing Tasks

I did the GAT last year but there is one thing I do not quite understand.  With the two writing tasks, what are you supposed to write about to do well?

With writing task 1:

Quote
Develop a piece of writing presenting the main information in the material. You
should not present an argument.
Your piece will be judged on:
  • how well you organise and present your understanding of the material,
  • your ability to communicate the information effectively, and
  • how clearly you express yourself.

Last year's writing task was about diamonds and you were presented with diagrams, statistics and a song.  Are you supposed to use all the stimuli material?

With writing task 2:

Quote
Based on one or more of the statements, develop a piece of writing presenting your point of view.

Your piece of writing will be judged on:
  • the extent to which you develop your point of view in a reasonable and convincing way, and
  • how effectively you express yourself.

So basically this is an argumentative piece of writing in which you have to persuade the reader, right?

I just wrote about the pieces off material in hierarchy of what appealed to me from first to last..
I dont think you have to draw upon all the material given though..

I didn't use all the material either.  I just chose the material that I thought would be relevant and then wrote my essay according to which ideas "flowed" in my essay.

In the end, I got a really crap mark for that section (in fact, my worst) so I don't think I approached it the right way.

My previous English Language teacher, who was also a GAT marker explained the writing tasks to us when I did it last year...I scored pretty average but it did 'scale up' heaps...anyways, with the first writing task, it is your aim to regurgitate ALL of the information on the poster.  All of it.  The more cohesive it is, the higher the mark, taking into account all that other writing stuff.  But yes, give it your best to write down as much information as you can cohesively, if not all of it.

Thanks for the tip.  I didn't "regurgitate" all the information so that was my problem.  :D
