Deakin is probably the next best, then La Trobe.

If you don't get high enough for Monash or ANU, just study very hard and aim to transfer to Monash at the end of your first year.

If I don't get into undergraduate medicine I'm considering Arts at Melbourne then a JD/JD joint degree from MLS AND NYU. Would be epic haha.

Don't risk the LSAT for the JD if you can avoid it.

If you want to stay in Melbourne, Deakin is your next best choice. Particularly if you're interested in the business side of law.

Why not graduate medicine?

I wasn't aware that it was much more difficult to get into the JD than MD. I thought that if I can't go well enough on the UMAT to at least get an interview for undergraduate medicine, it's not likely that I will do well enough on the GAMSAT to get into the MD.

I've always been a strong english student and come from an extensive debating/public speaking background so I think I would be quite suited to law so it will be my second preference.

Still not sure though as I would much prefer Medicine.

Putting it out there, whilst it's difficult, it's definitely not impossible to get into the JD program at Melbourne if you want to keep that as a potential option.  The CSP average last year was a WAM of something like 76%, and apparently 155+ on the LSAT is enough to get you by; both of these are very much achievable granted that you work hard and prepare thoroughly.  In fact, to anyone who suggests transferring, I'd also point out that you'd need a WAM of around this level to transfer into a law program at Monash anyway (although as Nina rightfully pointed out, evading the LSAT is always nice :p).

Of course, if you're dead set on being secure about having a law degree (which is completely understandable as well), apart from the Go8 universities Macquarie is apparently solid, especially if you're interested in business/commerce.  If you're really aiming for a 50 in English though, you can probably get into the ANU combined law program at least.

Apparently ANU's law program is one of the best but basically because nobody wants to go to Canberra, their clearly-in is quite low, apparently anything in the high 90s will guarantee you a spot.

The GAMSAT is a completely different test to the UMAT, the only section that's in common is Logical Reasoning, but that's on the LSAT as well :P Just pointing that out :P

Grad. Med isn't too hard to get into, I know people who've gotten into MD at UoM, but also people who have gotten into Deakin and Monash Gippsland. Just remember that there's more graduate med places than undergrad and hopefully undegrad med would have taken out some of the competition.

Hmm.. Well I can definitely see where you're coming from.

I guess I'll just try my best to get into undergraduate medicine and if that doesn't work out - then I'll have to do some serious thinking about what I want to do. It's a very difficult decision to make...

There's no logical reasoning section on the GAMSAT (there are a few logic questions but it's not the same as the UMAT)

I'm not sure about the LSAT (I am looking to sit this probably next year in hope of gaining a CSP place into UniMelb JD 2014). I would say the hardest component of the 3 tier entrance requirement to gain entrance into UniMelb JD would be maintaining your average.

A full fee place is actually relatively easy to obtain (approx 70 - 75 plus a decent LSAT 150-155) depending on the course you graduate with. But justifying spending 30k a year in a 3 year course is quite hard considering the competitive market for law student once they graduate.

CSP places are where the difficulty lies, word is that with a score of 150-155, you will probably need an average of 80+ to obtain an interview. (What makes it even more difficult is that UniMelb purposefully makes it ambiguous for prospective students in what is required to gain acceptance - asides from the few special chancellor scholars).
