Hey guys,

I'm just trying to sort out my timetable.

A prac initially released in the first round of timetabling early on monday morning (Chemistry 2) filled before I could enrol. Now, the second round of timetabling has been released, and that slot isn't there anymore, so I imagine it's been entirely filled.

My -whole- timetable falls into place if I can just be in that class, with absolutely no clashes, and a day off.

What is the likelihood of me going to the EPSC and trying to get the person to enrol me into the already filled class? I think that there is grounds to stand because last sem in Chemistry 1, there were always spare seats in every prac group (like one or two), so I fail to see much harm in having an extra student in one of the groups of 9 or 10.

Thought I'd ask you guys first before heading to uni.

Are you sure you can't swap it around? If it clashes with any lectures that you don't need to attend and can listen to them at home then it's ok

on the timetable it says:  for exceptional circumstances, if you need to be in a class that is full you should contact your Student Centre to see whether it is possible to place you in your required class. You will need to bring official documentation to support your request.

Note: Supporting documentation can include a letter from your employer explaining what days you are required at work; a letter from a childcare provider explaining the days any children are in care; a letter from a religious leader or a letter from a doctor outlining the days you will be receiving treatment). All documentation must be on official letterhead and should include a contact name and number for verification purposes.\

So i'd just try to change my timetable around to fit the chem prac in, i don't know if they'd let you go into the one you wanted otherwise

I think you should definitely go down to the EPSC and ask them to put you into that class, what's that worst the can happen? They'll check and if they can they'll put you in if not you'll have to enroll into another slot. There is no harm in going, especially if it means you could potentially get a spot and therefore keep that day off ;)

Personally i reckon they will put you in if you tell them a good reason for it. Also by tomorrow maybe all the prac classes will be full so they'll have to put you in a full one anyway.

You can try, but don't use the argument that there are spare seats. Every practical subject at Melbourne Uni has a limit on the number of people that can be in a lab at any one time, and the number of people that can be under the care of a certain demonstrator at one time. It's a part of the safety precautions of the class.

Is there a prac on the day off? If there is a prac on your day off, or another prac that you can attend without a clash you will be asked to enter into that prac before they will allow you to enrol in the full prac. You will be told to enter into it, and wait to see if a spot in the full prac opens up, and if it doesn't that will be your timetable.  Unless you live >2 hours of uni, you don't have much hope in getting the EPSC to fashion your timetable as you please, as much as it might suck.

I just went. She explained to me that all the departments try to get together to sort out clashes, and that they often release up new classes and stuff AFTER even today when they figure out how to get around it.

She said that pretty much by the end of the nexy business day (i.e. end of tomorrow) if it doesn't work, give the uni a call/shoot em an email and they will ask the departments directly whether they can slot you in.

For anyone who reads this in the future with the same question, they have processes and just go to your student centre, and they'll do a good job of sorting it out for you/providing a way forward.

I am not enrolled in a Physics prac as new slots refused to open up xD
