[Spies] Memory affecting current perceptions?

I'm struggling with this at the moment,
In the novel spies, how/ in what ways does Stephen Wheatley's memories affect his current day perception of reality (not an essay question, just looking for specific examples in the text)?

As memory laden as this piece is, given the relatively little insight we have into the old Stephen Wheatley's viewpoint on life (as directed by memories) i'm struggling to connect the dots between his past memories and the effect this has on his adult life

Any ideas?
Much appreciated :) !
