Whats a good subject to aim high in? (48+ raw)

I know it all depends on what youre good at and what you arent, but from a purely hypothetical point of view, in regards to the competition in the subject, which subjects are good to aim high in.

ill give some examples:
i hear people say that alot of good maths students do further for an "easy 50" so if you try to do well in further, but drop a mark and your 50 goes down straight away (a bit of an exaggeration perhaps)

and people also say in spesh, the kids who try it are already maths wizzes so youl have to be getting really good grades in a hard subject, to get those scores, and it could be to the detriment of your other subjects

another one is chem, alot of the super nerds who want to get into med, dentistry, etc, are good students usually and would study hard in all their subjects, but because chem is a pre-req it might get higher on their list of priorities, and then bam it becomes hard to get a high score because of the competition

i know its hard to get such a score in any subject but this stuff is all hypothetical LOL already put in my subject selections for next year, im just curious as to see what you seasoned vce veterans (HAHA) think about it all

cheers  ;D

Any subject but physics :D (not worth the time, effort, etc.)

Nah, but seriously, why not aim for all of them above 48 if you can manage it? :)

English. It has to be in your top 4. Do well in english and it will take so much stress away, which will enable you to perform better in everything else.

HAHA, after looking deeper into the study design for physics im kind of hoping i have some excuse to drop it for something else, i thought there would be more maths in it :(

In the first week of school say "Physics is shit, change me to something else".
Done.

Nah cmon... Physics isnt that bad. It's the closest thing to maths without actually being a maths subject! And plus, topics like motion improves in 3&4 from 1&2

Further maths - the reason is because every year, approximately 65 people get a 50 in further maths, which is higher than any subject other than English. Yes, there are a fair few spesh students that do further at the top end, but out of 30,000 further maths students, I would be surprised if any more than 1000 of them did specialist. Realistically, probably about 500-800 specialist students do further, so that means that 1 in 10 spesh students will score a 50 in further (assuming that they outperform the others). It's not uncommon at all for spesh students to score 45+ in further. The odds are actually a lot better than you think.

Ideally, a 50 in English would be the best, but that is much more difficult to achieve than a 50 in further (because people take English very seriously at the top end).

to be honest, as a chem student and an aspiring high scoring further student, id say it does simply come down to personal prefrance.

The way i think about it is this: its (relativity) easy to score well in something like further, i got an A on my first practice exam. However aiming as high as a 50, it does come down to how well you can limit your mistakes. But in something like chem, it takes alot more work to be capable of scoring that well (more coarse content, harder to understand) and as a result, you can afford one or two slips in your exams become everyone feels under the pressure that that subject offers. so i think that it comes down to the balance of how well you pick up on content and how well you can actually answer questions/ eliminate errors in an assesment's.

You say 48+ raw, but id defiantly consider looking at scaling if anyones thinking of taking up a subject for this. if you are willing to put in the time, i would say aiming high in specialist would give you more security for a high mark then in something 'easy' like further where you don't have the mark up to flick the full top 9% of the state into the 50's.

But back to your actual question, for a score as high as your talking (it takes real time and effort, trust me (not that iv done it)) you have to spend a considerable amount of time with it, so just pick something you enjoy and absolutely destroy it- i think that's the main factor when it comes to the 45+ range.
