Hi guys, i have a few questions that i've come across in the last few weeks, was hoping someone could help me out :)

  • What is the difference between artifical selection and selective breeding? or is selective breeding artificial selection?
  • does mitosis ONLY occur in somatic cells? or do germline cells undergo mitosis and meiosis?

thanks :)

artificial selection is selective breeding and mitosis only happens in somatic cells.  :)
germline cells undergo meiosis (for example: gametes)

Cells of some male haploid bees will undergo mitosis to create gametes actually. It was a question in the 2006 VCAA exam.

i thought selective breeding, would be something like lier birds (or how ever you spell them) choose specific traits of their mate, like bigger tail

and artificial breeding was what humans do; eg dog breeding

am i wrong or.?

this is called 'non-random mating'  which you could say was a form of selective breeding by the species itself :p but i guess you could define selective breeding as human intervention into the process?

I've never heard the term artificial breeding, but artificial selection is the human intervention in the selection process, breeding specific traits that they require, not what would be naturally selected.
