There's really no maximum amount that you can write - I've done equally well writing <1200 word pieces in an hour as I have writing between 1300-1500 in the same time frame. As a minimum though I think you want to be breaking 1000 words, to get into that upper echelon of marks.

My teacher takes marks off when my pieces are too long. Word limit is 800-1200 for our SACS and mine go for around 1000 words.  >:(

I would disagree, to a degree.I have reached the 10/10 mark with a mere 800-900 words at times(with text res and context). Then again, it can vary, but as long as the assessment criteria is addressed, you will be looking at a good mark.

My LA SAC was 2200 words and I was the only person who got full marks haha. As long as you maintain a high level of discussion throughout your piece, length will not matter, so long as it's longer than 800 words, though if it's less than 1000 you really, really want to be saying as many smart things as you can in those fewer words.

2200 words? Holy shitake mushrooms, that's a lot of writing. How long did you do that in? It surely can't be one hour because that would be insane.

Someone last year at my school wrote 12 pages in a context SAC for an A+ (we don't get told marks) which I thought was pretty impressive and pretty keen.

It was a two hour SAC, spent about 20 minutes reading and proofreading.

I think it was a 2 hour SAC and he wrote creative. He writes with some serious gusto though so I wasn't surprised when I found out haha.

Yeah I write at about 25 words per minute but I have a friend who according to his Latin teacher writes 30 words per minute or something. Just freakish

Writing 25 words per minute is already freaky in my opinion, I can't write over 18 words per minute. The absolute maximum I can write in an hour would be approximately 1100 words

I'm at about 30 words per minute at best.. like if I'm on a roll.

I could do 30 but it'd be completely illegible. Another big part of how quickly you write is what you're writing, obviously - with text response it all comes down to how well you know the text in relation to the question, and with context it's about how easily ideas about the prompt flow within your piece. In this case I reckon it's better to slow down a little bit and develop your ideas as much as possible - concise explanation of highly complex and cogent ideas beats an elaborate discussion of less well thought out arguments any day.

I find myself able to write so much more quickly for Lit and LA because it's just non-stop analysis of presented written material - you don't really have to stop and think to yourself 'what am I going to write next' because you take each sentence/whatever as its given to you, especially if you've had 15 minutes already to sequence your arguments and what you're going to write about when.

Plus, legibility is a big deal - my politics teacher always takes marks off for handwriting, even if you've doubled the word count. Definitely a sacrifice worth making (length for legibility).
