Millennium Development Goals

What is the purpose and reason for each goal?

eg Promote gender equality and empower women
is the purpose to ensure women have equal access to education and health services, and are not discriminated against
or is the purpose more about knowing facts like 70% of people living in poverty are women

my book has a page written for each MDG purpose and reason, i just want a sentence for each yet i cant seem to distinguish the difference between purpose and reason

For goal 3(the purpose) Is to raise the SES status of women and allow equal access to education. The reasons include are females are less likely than males to have access to education, meaning employment opportunities are restricted, education can allow females to have higher paying jobs and avoid dangerous occupations such as prostitution and women are primary caregivers and so increasing their knowledge (particularly about health) can have positive effects on the entire family. You don't need to know stats but you can make a general comment about it though because you most likely won't remember the stat.

When you talk about the "purpose" of each MDG, we're looking at those specific target goals. E.g. the "purpose" of MDG 1 (Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger) is to "halve the proportion or number of people living on less than US$1 a day" :) So if a Q ever asks you to give the "purpose" of an MDG, you state (and briefly explain depending on the marks) that target goal :)

You DON'T need to know any other statistics relating to MDG's except for this target goal that makes up the "purpose" of each MDG :)

would you be able to post the purpose of each MDG for me?

Purpose/Target Goals of each MDG

MDG 1
- To halve the proportion of people living on less than $1 a day (by 2015)
- To reduce hunger by half

MDG 2
-  To provide access to education to boys and girls so that they can complete a full course of primary school education (universal primary schooling)

MDG 3
- Equal girls’ enrolment in primary school (equal access to education)
- Women should have their fair share of paid employment
-Women should have equal representation in National parliaments

MDG 4
- Reduce the under-5 mortality rate (deaths of children under the age of 5) by two-thirds

MDG 5
- Reduce the maternal mortality rate by three-quarters

MDG 6
- Halt and reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and malaria
- Halt and reverse the spread of tuberculosis (TB)

MDG 7
- Halve the number of people who don’t have access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation
- Reserve the loss of forests

MDG 8
- To address the needs of the least developed nations through the provision of Official Development Assistance (ODA) by the richer and more developed nations
- To relieve the debt of developing countries; increase and improve aid
- To allow developing countries to competitively trade their goods on the global market, and thus elevate their development and GDP
- Make new technologies available, esp. those relating to communication (e.g. Internet)

Hope this cleared things up! :) :) In a 2 mark Q asking for the "purpose" of a particular MDG, mentioning 1 of these target goals and explaining the significance of the target in relation to the MDG should suffice :)

Do we need to specify the target year is 2015?

Yepp but you won't lose marks if you don't (knowing the target date is 2015 is assumed knowledge so they don't expect you to explicitly write it out every time you answer a MDG Question :) )

When asked for the purpose you can write the targets, or a couple of lines about how it will improve health and human development.
When asked for the reasons, talk about how NOT meeting the MDGs will have a negative impact on health and human development, for example for MDG 1: When people do not have access to food or an adequate income, they do not have the energy or means to attend school, purchase medication, etc etc.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

perpetual is right :) I'd recommend writing a target in the "purpose" and then briefly expanding on what that target means in relation to the MDG...e.g. The purpose of MDG 1 is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by "halving the proportion of people who live on less than US$1 a day". This means that we are focused on halving the number of people who live in extreme poverty and who cannot afford basic healthcare, nutritious food or adequate shelter to improve health and hd. :) and for the reasons, mention the reasons as to why it's important for the MDG to exist in the first place (i.e. why do we need this MDG to exist? What health/hd problems would arise if we didn't have an MDG relating to extreme poverty or child mortality or maternal health?) :)
I hope this makes sense?? :)
