so i am in year eleven, and we had two options for maths, either GMA or GMB, and GMB is a prerequisite for specialist in year twelve, and GMA is a prerequisite for Further in year twelve, but apparently if you do GMB, you can still do further in year twelve. I chose GMB in year eleven, keeping in mind that it is going to be a help in Methods 3/4 in year twelve. so will it be better if, apart from methods 3/4, i choose Spesh or Further in year twelve?

(NOTE : At my school, GMB is advanced and GMA is easier, where else at some Schools, its the opposite, so when you answer my post, and if you are from there other schools where GMA is more advanced, then you can  read where ever I have written GMB as GMA, and GMA as GMB. ) :)

I wouldn't say that you would be too disadvantaged doing GMB then Further, as further is quite easy to pick up if you are average at maths or willing to put effort in. I didn't do further 1/2 (GMA), but did further in year 11 while I was doing  methods 1/2 and GMB, and still did well (45). What I would suggest you do is by the end of the year work out if you are capable of doing spesh, because if you are its better to do spesh than further (in my opinion), while if you don't think you would be able to do spesh, then to do further, and you won't be too disadvantaged. Yes the people who did GMA will know more at the start, but its seriously not that hard to pick up further without the 1/2.

Specialist maths complements methods, whereas further is like a completely different subject with heaps of annoying data, statistics and box plots. Plus with the new system, specialist maths is easier to get a higher scaled score in.

Having said that, spec is a lot more time-consuming than further and if you are only trying to "wing" the subject, then go with further. Don't do specialist maths unless you are prepared to study hard, but if you are prepared for that, then the rewards are a lot greater.

    Wait what?

    At my school, at least:

    • y11. GMA ---> y12. Spec
    • y.11 Methods ---> y12. Methods
    • y.11 GMB ---> y12. Further

    Its probably just the way the schools label the subjects, what we had was 'Standard General Mathematics' which set you up for Further, and 'Advanced General Mathematics' which helped methods and partially set you up for further... with no yr 11 subject that would set you up for spesh (our school made us do the further chapter out of the advanced general maths books instead of the spesh chapters since the majority of us would do further while only 10 or so would do spesh).

    It just depends on how the school runs it, different schools run year 11 differently.

    Same as b^3, except the word "standard" came before the word "general".
