How difficult is it to get a h1 average?

Going into 1st year of BSc at Melbourne, and I'd like to get the best grades...

Just wondering if getting a h1 average (80%+ I think) is like getting the 99.95 of VCE (i.e. crazy), or if it's actually attainable for a standard student.

The reason I ask is that I'd like to have the best opportunities to progress into post-grad studies at Melbourne, or even transfer out sometime.

Also I may as well ask... I know I don't have to worry about this right now, but I'm just idly curious how the grading system at Melb that I hear about (H1's, H2A etc), translates into the 7 point GPA scale. I.e. does a h1 average mean a perfect gpa 7?

It's definitely attainable but you'll have to work as hard as you did in VCE, most likely, if not harder depending on how naturally the material comes to you.

No matter your score above 80, as long as you get a H1, your GPA remains perfect.

Just to point out the perfect gpa 7 thing, a H1 average does not mean a perfect 7.0 gpa. It rarely does.

To get a perfect 7.0gpa, you literally CANNOT get below 80 for any single unit, but you can get a H1 average (80+) without getting H1's for everything.

Eg. Take 4 units for example, you score 90,85,82,71.
Assuming that they are all of equal weight,
This translates to a 82 average mark, which is an 80+ average, with a corresponding 6.75 GPA, which is not a perfect 7.0 gpa. Hope that clears it up.

I got a friend who got in to MD with a 6.2x GPA from B.Sci and 6x GAMSAT . She did have a fair amount of first aid experience + probably did well in the interview though.

Seeing you hoping to get into med, why not do UMAT again this year and apply as a non-standard (UTAS, UWS, UADEL and some other UNIs)? Also when you reach to year 2, you can do GAMSAT twice per year (once in AUS and once in the UK)
