I don't have a laptop yet, but plan on buying one in the near future for University.
What you should be looking for is:
- Good screen size (13.3", 14" is usually recommended for students since you'll be travelling with it)
- Lightweight and considerately small, remember, you'll be travelling with this so you don't want to be holding around a chunky laptop
- Make sure it has a CD-ROM. A lot of small laptops don't have one.
- Good specs, preferably an i3 processor at minimum, but at $800 you'd be able to find an i7 processor laptop.

To sum it up, pretty much just buy an ultrabook, 13.3" or 14", light and decent specs.

Disc drives aren't really necessary anymore. I can't even remember the last time I used mine. If you need one, you should buy an portable disc drive.

I was reasonably impressed with the windows surface when I got to have a look at it today, consider that. IPad with keyboard also works but I'm less impressed with that as a pseudo laptop, since it was never trying to be one

You don't need a CD-ROM drive at all. Or a DVD-ROM drive.

Agreed, my laptop doesn't have an optical drive and I've only ever needed to have one once (I bought a portable CD/DVD one for like $40 or something).

I guess it's just my preference. I've found CD-ROM's handy to install games, listen to music and I can imagine perhaps OP might get some CD's in the future to help with his Uni studies, but I guess you could just pickup an external CD-ROM if you really do need to use one.
