To increase your GPA from 2.4 to 3 in one year of normal, full-time study:

5 HDs and 3 Ds
-or-
6 HDs, 1 D and 1 C
-or-
7 HDs and 1 P

Yes, WAM is easier to boost than GPA because at Monash your first year units are only weighted at half.

If I remember correctly, I think most grad application forms I've filled out asked for GPA, but not necessarily WAM.

Just a random question: will your GPA from Australian unis be exactly how you report it if you apply for American colleges for post-grad or is there some conversion scale?

Generally, you give the uni you're applying to a transcript and they do it for you I believe. Prestige and international recognition works well here, because they are going to believe that grades from a higher ranked university are "better" than the same grades from some unknown university (this is just what I've heard, don't quote me on it).

EDIT: For my exchange application, I had to give in an official transcript to send over to California, so I'm assuming that they will infer what calibre student I am from where I come from (UoM) and the grades from said university.
