It'll only be a waste if you did a course that you didn't like. Whilst there may be people who will judge you for your ATAR, you have to keep in mind that you are not satisfying them, and that aiming for a course that is only "worthy" of your ATAR means that you're working hard for somebody else's standards. However, if you feel like you would like more of a challenge and if there is a double degree available which incorporates your chosen area with another field, then, by all means, aim high and get that double degree! but first, be honest with yourself and know that the course you choose is there to satisfy you and not anybody else. The ATAR you get is a result of your hard work and even if the required ATAR for the course is lower, it doesn't matter because you'll get it anyway. You just have to think and say to yourself that you worked hard to get where you want to be and that the ATAR is just one way of getting there, even if it is clearly higher than what was required.
