Mitosis and Meiosis Questions

Hey guys I just wanted someone to correct me on these two questions.

1.What term is used to describe a cells with more than one set of chromosomes?
-----Polyploid Cells

2.Describe one way in which mitosis is different than binary fission.
----Binary Fission only occurs in prokaryotic cells and some eukaryotic organelles such as the mitochondria, while mitosis occurs in all somatic cells in a eukaryotic organism

Thanks to those who are able to help.

1. Diploid too
2. I think they're looking for how mitosis is different process wise rather than just where they occur. Eg. Mitosis is slower than binary fission, or tha spindle is formed during mitosis and not binary fission.

That's a tricky question to be honest, for the VCE course in particular. Any number of things you could say, the prokaryote eukaryote distinction, the speed (though this isn't always the case), the specifics of each process, or even the complexity. Mitosis is a far more complex process.

1. I think somatic cells is the answer they're after. It encompasses everything (unless there are organisms that only have one copy of chromosomes - please correct me if this is the case).

Are muscle cells and neurons considered somatic cells?
If yes, then mitosis does not occur in all somatic cells in a eukaryotic organism

Yes, they are somatic and mitosis has occurred at some point to create those cells.

okay but saying that mitosis occurs in all somatic cells would be incorrect, wouldn't it?

No, I don't think so. Certainly not in terms of the VCE course. I'm yet to do uni genetics!

1. Polyploid

2. From last year's assessment report...

"Binary fission differs from mitosis as
 the chromosome does not line up on the equator
 the chromosome does not separate at the centromere
 there are no spindle fibres
 there are no phases; for example, prophase
 it is quicker.

It was important that students identified how the two processes differed. Therefore, to state that binary fission occurred
in prokaryotes was not relevant and did not gain any marks."
