Engineering subjects as electives?

Hi guys,

So long story short I'm in my 1st year of a commerce/economics double degree. All's going well, but I'm beginning to find an interest in chemical engineering. Considering a transfer to com/eng, but don't want to jump straight into it next year on a bit of a whim, as I'd be giving up lots of com subjects, scholarship and time.

I've spoken to a course adviser about using my electives (I have heaps in this double) on engineering subjects next year and see how things go from there. Is this even possible? I was told that they would have to check availability in February, but wasn't given an outright no. But that goes against what I've been told by other students. Does a BusEco student taking Eng subjects ever happen?

So provided I am allowed to do some eng units, which ones would be best to take? I was thinking ENG1010, ENG1091 and ENG1060?

What do you guys recommend? I'm planning on having a read through some chem eng textbooks over the summer + watch a few lectures. Any help would be very much appreciated!

It is possible that a BusEco student taking a unit that is outside the faculty; there is at least one student who's doing some sort of commerce or economics degree and taking MTH2032 Differential Equations this semester. But since you are doing a double degree, two 3-year courses are taught in 4 years, which means all the free electives are used for the units in those degrees, so in general, people doing double degrees don't have any electives.

Anyways, I'd say ENG1060 is probably the best. Even if you decided not to do engineering anymore for whatever reasons, the skills you learned in this unit would still be useful. As for ENG1091, it's like a mixture of MTH1030 and a little bit of MTH2010 and it's not gonna be easy if you are not strong in maths.

The only problem with this is it wouldn't really give him a feel of Chem Eng. I'm not saying that it's a bad idea, it's just that ENG1060 is basically interpreting maths and programming. Wouldn't it be better for OP to do ENG1010 to at least see where the first year chem eng subject leads? Otherwise he might an idea of a general tool from engineering, but not really what kind of engineering that he's looking into.

With that being said, I've done ENG1060 and ENG1091, but not ENG1010, so not sure what level of maths is required, although the prereq is only 3/4 Methods, so it might be a bit lighter in maths if they're not particularly up to the standard level for eng. ENG1060 needs some interpretation from ENG1091, and well ENG1091 is a co-requisite for it. What I'm getting at is even if you got that waived, it'd probably not be a great idea to jump into Computing without the maths behind it.

So yeah, I'd probably think ENG1010, the first year chem eng elective is the way to go.

Thanks for the help guys :)

Because Commerce and Economics have a lot of core units and majors that cross over, I can potentially have up to 8 free electives, so I've a few units that I can play with.

Anyways, I'd say ENG1060 is probably the best. Even if you decided not to do engineering anymore for whatever reasons, the skills you learned in this unit would still be useful. I did methods(40) and Spec(39) in year 12, would that be enough of a base to do ENG1091?

Thanks b^3, ENG1010 sounds best. I'm thinking ENG1010 and ENG1091 semester 1, and ENG1060 Semester 2 and see how we go from there :)

Yeah, if they let you do it that would be enough of a base (you'd just have to go over spesh a little before you start the unit :P)

The worst that can really happen is that you do it and don't like it, and well depending on those elective slots (although it sounds like it's fine), just take a little bit longer to do the initial degree, but knowing that you gave eng a little bit of a shot. It's better knowing and then not going down that path than to not know and wonder what might have been (kinda like me and sci).

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Thanks for all the help :D

Well I didn't do spec and only got 37 in methods but found ENG1091 to be alright and ended up with a 93 for the unit so you should be easily able to handle it.

ENG1010 is pretty much a combination of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics so would probably give you the best indication of what chemical engineering will be like if you continue on with it. It really requires basic maths and you would be fine doing without having done ENG1091. ENG1060 is the easiest eng subject there is, its not necessary to have done ENG1091 but i guess it might help when it comes to ODEs but thats only covered in the last couple of weeks in the semester anyway.

Thanks :) ENG1010 sounds pretty swell :D I still reckon I'll have to go over some maths in the summer and do ENG1091 before ENG1060 - the maths part of my brain hasn't been touched after a year in commerce so I'll be very rusty!
