Biomed - Majors & Second Year Subjects

Hey everyone,

I was just deciding on some selectives for next year (2nd year of biomed) and was a bit unsure of what to do. I plan on doing microbes in sem 2 and was going to do principles of genetics in sem 1 because i thought it would provide a pathway to more of the majors, then i realised it's only needed for a genetics major which i dont really plan on doing. I suppose i want an elective that is not overly difficult as i really want to focus on the cores as i have been told multiple times that they can be quite a handful. Any suggestions would be welcomed, thanks.

Oh and just to add, im strictly trying to focus on biology based subjects, know way am i touching maths or physics lol

Techniques in Molecular Science opens up a couple of the life sciences majors.

Techniques in Molecular Science opens up the Biochemistry major for you, but since you're not doing Principles of Genetics you will be unable to major in Genetics. So really it's just a case of whether you can see yourself majoring in Biochem more or Genetics.

Apparently some of Principles of Genetics is covered in MCB and the subject itself isn't too hard.

If you like genetics, it's still quite good knowledge to have as genetics will constantly pop up no matter what you do really.

If you don't plan on doing a genetics major, Principles of Genetics is still a selective that many people choose since it is quite an easy subject to score well in. Exam questions are recycled each year for the population genetics component and you get at least 5 years worth of practice exams so if you manage to go through them you'll do well. The content isn't really similar to MCB but in my opinion is quite interesting in itself. Not a bad selective to choose if you want to focus on MCB since the workload is quite minimal (attending lectures and doing past questions when the assessments pop up).
