PSYCHOLOGY

Hey there,
I've never done psych before (neither VCE or uni psych) but thinking of doing a second year psych subject; biological psychology or developmental psychology.
Seeing as my friends are being super vague and the subject coordinator won't reply, please advise me!
Will I die from not knowing how to write psych reports?
I kinda can't risk anymore average-ish marks but I really want to try it out.
Should I just do first year psych or can I handle second year?
Cheers!
 ;D ;D ;D

Hi Julia,

Im assuming this is your first year at uni? Personally i recommended you just do first year subjects for your first semester as it does take some time to adjust to uni life. Im a 2nd year biomed student and i did a 2nd year history subject in my first year of uni during my second semester and i found that i would not have done well at all if i had done it in first sem. I didnt realise how much adjustment it would take during first sem but am glad i didnt do it in first sem. If you think you can handle it, by all means do it but my advice is to wait until 2nd sem or the following year if its not available in second sem.

Hope this helped a bit.

Hello Julia

I done MBB1, first year psych subject, in my first year first semester. It was okay, not too hard and its more about cognitive side of psychology. The assignment is also really easy. All in all you can easily get an H1 if you study well for final exam.

Then for second semester I decided to do 2 second year psychology which were cognitive psych and personality and social psych...biggest mistake in my life!!! they where much much harder that MBB1 and you should really understand concepts well! my 2 lowest grades from first year came from these 2! some of the topics where interesting specially in personality psych as it is more into clinical psychology.

If you just want to try to see if  psychology is a career option for u or not, start with MBB1 and then MBB2. taking second year subjects in first year at least for me did not end up great : )

Additional requirements:

No more than 125 points at Level 1 may be included in the BSc
No more than 37.5 points of breadth at Level 1 may be included in the BSc
Progression: Students must normally complete 50 points of study at one subject year level before proceeding to the next subject year level.
Diversity of Level 1 science study: Students must complete Level 1 subjects from at least two different areas of study. A maximum of 37.5 points at Level 1 from any single area of study may be completed. The areas of study available are: Biology; Chemistry; Earth Sciences; Engineering Systems; Geography and Environments; Informatics; Mathematics and Statistics; Physics; Psychology; Vision Sciences

You have to take 4 first year subjects (read progression) before taking a second year subject. This does not apply for UMEP students because that's a special case. So, you may as well take MBBS1 before even trying a 2nd year psych subject. Personally, I'm surprised they would even let someone enrol who hadn't taken 1st year subjects in the same field.

Sorry I didn't mention I'm going into 2nd year. I've already done 7 first year science subjects and one breadth
