If you're given an article and your teacher wants you to write about persuasive techniques, I think your task is to write a Language Analysis - which is different from the Text Response.

In the Language Analysis you do not include your opinion on the issue outlined in the article. Instead, you're supposed to analyse how the writer, through the language and stylistic features of their article, have persuaded their audience. Each time you incorporate an example (quoting it) from the piece, you will discuss the purpose of this (the author's aim) and the possible effect on the reader (usually related to the writer's contention).

What year are you in, OP? If Year 12, it's most likely that your teacher wants you to do a Lang Analysis (as outlined above), and they perhaps just didn't explain it that clearly.

If Year 11 or Year 10, though, a lot of teachers give kind of 'intermediate' media responses as homework or assessment, sort of as a mid-way task between easier media work and the final goal of writing a Lang Analysis (because LAs are quite difficult). In which case they will have made up their own structure and criteria for it, and possibly none of us has written a piece the same before!

Maybe if you can copy the exact instructions from your teacher out, it will be easier for us to give accurate advice :)
