Not sure which subjects to do, B.A.

Hi all, just a bit unsure about what subjects I want to do this year so I'm looking for some advice. I already have my major and minor figured out (Major in International Relations and minor in Human Rights) however I still need another 4 subjects. I'm looking to transfer into Law after a year so I want to do subjects that can be somewhat tied to that area or to international relations. Some of the subjects I have on the shortlist are:

- Understanding crime (ATS1281)
- Contemporary worlds 1 (ATS1325)
- Contemporary worlds 2 (ATS1326)
- Criminal justice (in) action (ATS1282)
- Fanatics and fundamentalists: The global politics of violence (ATS1355)

I've already read over the subject review thread but if there are any other people who have had experiences with any of these subjects then post here! At the same time reccomend some subjects to me :) Also, as I need a certain WAM to be able to transfer, if anyone could let me know how strenuous it is to get good marks in any of these subjects, thanks.

I got a bit confused when I saw Fanatics and Fundamentalists on your list because its no longer a 1st year unit :P You may be looking a pre-2014 handbook entry. Its actually a second year unit now.

Consider doing units for Politics Major.

Actually wooow, now that I think about it, I was going to tell you to do Contemp worlds 1&2 because i didnt read your list properly, but saw you were wanting to do IR. I have a feeling you have the handbook for the wrong year!!!!! The Majors for the B.A have entirely changed this year, into some fake ass attempt at copying UoM. Contemp Worlds 1&2 are now only first year units for the Major International Studies, so along with them you could consider the ones you need for IR :P

Either way your remaining units will most likely be considered as electives so feel free to go nuts on what you choose essentially. Most end up doing Units like Psych. Orrrrr if you want, you can branch out and do a second year unit that contributes to your IR major

Annnnd I just had a look at HR, you also have the wrong list there too???

You're starting your degree in 2014 so the handbook entry that counts is that years' :)

We do have many reviews for Contemp. If you look in my signature (down there) you'll see a link to monash subject reviews, you can do a little reading there.

As SBC says, its critical you use the handbook for the year you started your degree or you can mess up things very quickly. Since you're starting this year, make sure its the 2014 handbook.

Just as a total sidenote, your arts major doesnt *need* to compliment law. Plenty Ba/LLB people are doing languages like Japanese, French, etc or things like philosophy or history.

So I can't do the contemps one if I don't do international studies as a major? Bit confused at the moment. Also, with the subjects, do you have a list or do I have to click on each area of study?

Contemp Worlds is the first year prereq to complete the Major International Studies. You dont have to do IS, but thats what the units are for. If you want to do IR and HR you need to make sure you have the required first year units to be able to progress and do 2nd/3rd year units in later years.

Well each area of study has a list, so if you click on those links I've provided and use the sidebar to navigate yourself through the different Areas of Study. So go to 'Areas Of Study' then 'By Faculty' then 'Arts' then go down the list.

Looking at your units so far, it doesnt look like you have the 2nd year Crim unit enrolled in yet?

Why would I have 2nd year?

I just added the 2nd semester then so I have:
  • ATS1281 Understanding crime
  • ATS1314 Human rights theory 1
  • ATS1353 Introduction to politics
  • ATS1282 Criminal justice (in) action
  • ATS1315 Human rights theory 2
  • ATS1873 Introduction to international relations

Still need another two.

Awks meant 2nd semester. After a while the semesters feel like years ahahaha

You can do Contemp Worlds if you want, its pretty much Twentieth Century History for Semester 1, and Globalisation for 2nd.

Yuuuup.

You have until 2nd week of semester to change units. You could also consider Sociology, Psychology, Geography/Sustainabilities& Society, and like KP suggested, languages. You might end up needing a larger mix in second semester, not all your units have to relate to each other.

As for advice on how hard they are, Contemp Worlds I got Credits from doing less than the bare minimum.
