Hi all,

Currently I'm in Year 10 and I've been thinking about what I want to do when I'm older, I plan to do an engineering degree at Melbourne uni. First I was thinking of programming hence Computing and Software Systems engineering, but since I've had no prior coding experience so far, I'm not sure if just picking it up and learning it at uni will suffice so I've decided I want to design things such as mobile phones, tablets, computers instead. So I'm not sure which branch of engineering this comes under at Melbourne uni - electronic or is it still a branch of software and computing systems engineering?
I have googled around and it seems to come under electrical but when I look at the program descriptions on the Melb uni site, I just get confused - I'm a bit of a noob.

Any advice will be appreciated,
Thanks.

When you say "design", do you mean the architecture of the system or the actual electronic components inside?

Honestly, that sounds more like electronics engineering. There is quite a few subjects on this in the Electrical Systems major / M.Eng (Electrical) program. I'd recommend coupling it with the Computer and Software Systems subjects, as this would give you a great founding in the Electrical and Programming side. Good luck with your studies!

MJRomeo, sorry to sound like a noob, but what do you mean by architecture?
In response to Hancock, so I'll be able to electrical systems major and do computing subjects, that's great, but does it apply to undergraduate degrees such as the bachelor of science?

Thanks.

Yeah, you apply for the B.Sc and take your subjects from there.

electrical engineers learn about the hardware of the tablets/ iPhones.. so the chips, how information is transferred in and out of the device. So analog to digital, gigs, bytes, data, circuits. Keep in mind though that electrical engineers have to do a lot of programming and most will know some software stuff anyway to program robots etc. Software engineers  aren;t involved in the actual putting together of an iPhone, they do stuff after it is built.
Software engineers design the programs..so like the games/apps on iPhones, microsoft word, snapchat, Facebook.. that sort of stuff.
