Hey guys,

So, a while back, I asked whether I should go to Xavier or MHS... (Xavier or MHS?)

Anyway, I chose Xavier. But I am starting to regret it. And there's no way I can leave, cause then I would have to pay for everything.

How do I deal with this??

If you can't leave, the only thing you can do is shift your perspective, find ways to see the positives, bite the bullet and just do it.
You haven't given us enough detail on what the problem is so we can't really offer any specific advice.

If you chose MHS, you'd probably get this image of Xavier and think "shit wrong choice". When there's two equally good options, it's impossible not to doubt your choice. Just recognise that and focus on the positives of Xavier.

Yeah, you haven't given us any reason why you're regretting going so it's a bit hard to give suggestions

If it's based on academic performance - teachers are bad, not a good academic culture - then definitely don't worry; how well you do is like 90% you and 10% your school. You've discovered this site which is a great resource if you have questions you don't want to ask at school.

If its based on extracurriculars like sport (I'm not sure if sport is compulsory at Xavier) then you're gonna have to just accept it. It definitely doesn't have to be a major issue unless you make it one yourself, sport training doesn't take up much time anyway unless you're in one of the best sport teams.

If it's bullying / harassment then it is probably better if you take action now and talk to the school about it

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Hi guys,

You're right. I haven't really specified...

The problem is that I don't think I really go well with Xavier. The people are all nice and everything, but I think I would be better suited to the MHS environment (if you know what I mean)

I'm also kind of worried that I will be a little disadvantaged when it comes to VCE, cause the cohort might not be as strong, etc...

It's just small things like these that are making me regret my decision. And I understand that its kind of a first world problem, cause they're both good schools.

I was just wondering if anyone else went through something like this?

This is still pretty vague and unhelpful.
Maybe other people here "know what you mean" but your statement above doesn't tell me much more than your original post did....
Perhaps it's like what a poster above said, you just have a case of "the grass is always greener" syndrome.
Sounds like there isn't really anything specific that is causing you a great deal of trauma at Xavier and that if you had chosen MHS you'd probably be thinking the same thing.

The grass is always greener on the other side. MHS is a good school, but so is Xavier. You said that you don't feel like Xavier "goes well with you" right now but how do you know you wouldn't be feeling the same if you'd chosen MHS?

I spent a lot of time while I was at MHS in year 9/10 wishing I'd stayed at St. Michael's after I left all my friends there from year 7/8. It wasn't until halfway through year 10 that I really felt comfortable there and could say I was confident that I'd made the right call.

correct me if im wrong, but I'm taking this as a "the students aren't as studious, some of the dumber students are going to weigh me down" kinda message

I was pretty upset when I didn't get into Macrob and spent some time lamenting on me being stuck at my school but it the end I realised it was my own efforts that got me the ATAR I desired

Xavier is not a bad school at all! I think there wont be a drastic difference in your ATAR at either but its more shifting your perspective on looking forward and making the best of what you have now

I know that school environment and such can be quite influential on ones performance, but remember that how a person performs in VCE is primarily based on their attitude and approach to it.
From what I can gather, it doesn't seem like a super feasible option to move schools now. Having this mindset that you won't perform as well in the environment from Xavier is only going to weigh you down and feel as if you're not going to achieve your full potential. But you know what? You can, if you put your mind to it and truly believe in your capabilities and utilise the huge amount of resources Xavier has to succeed. The main thing that seems to be disadvantaging you is the attitude you're currently holding. Like the others have already mentioned, the two schools are very similar in terms of resources, performance, etc.
Don't let your choice set you back, accept it and move on to dominating VCE! Good luck

From what I've heard, Xavier is a great school!! So don't worry about having a poor cohort. I'm pretty sure that if I were a boy, I would choose to go to a school like Xavier.
Also, I think Simba gave some really good advice... :)

Dude, you're lucky to be at Xavier in the first place. I remember ages ago when I tried out for a few scholarships ... and I didn't even land one. (And no, I wasn't stupid.)

The mindset stuff that people talk about is the truth. Think positive!

Consider this:
  • Do you have friends at Xavier that you would never have met, if you had decided to go to Melbourne High?
  • What about the teachers and community?
  • What about the good memories that would never have become memories?

Surely there's something there at Xavier that you would have missed if you had chosen otherwise, even if it's greeting the guy whose locker is nearby every morning, going to the local hang out, having a laugh at an Xavier student's stories or taking the bus route that lulls you to sleep in the morning.

In regards to VCE, it's only what you make of it. It really doesn't matter how bad or well you do. (Ok, to some people "doing badly" could seem like the end of the world.) It's how you tackle it, how you learn from it, how you persevere and how you confront your future. Irregardless of who you are, by just starting VCE, you have had a better education and brighter opportunities than many people around the globe.

You are a lucky child and remember it. Without being at Xavier, there is a likelihood that you would not be the great person you are today. (And everyone is great in their own way. Not everybody knows it. That's all.) Never look back to the past and what could have been, because the future is what you make of it today.
