Hi guys,

First off, I'm not exactly sure if this thread belongs here or not, so if it isn't, could it be kindly moved to the appropriate forum? Thanks.

Basically, I'm in Year 12, and it is getting to that time of the year where we have to submit our preferences for our tertiary studies next year. All throughout my schooling life, I had, and still don't have any idea of what I want to do or be specifically. However, after doing some research, talking to alumni of my school and a few of my parents' work associates, I have come to the conclusion that the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Engineering at Monash University seems to interest me quite a bit, and supposedly will keep my 'options' open for my future. I'm not doing Physics or Specialist Mathematics this year, so I'll obviously be needing the bridging course.

I'd just like to ask members of ATAR Notes, especially those Monash University students who may be studying these courses at the moment, or have studied them, what were/are your experiences or opinions of achieving this double degree?

Thanks,
Kevin.

I'm doing the Bachelor of Commerce / Economics double degree, so I can only speak on the commerce side.

You're limited to only 1 commerce major if you choose Comm. / Eng, so choose carefully. I don't know about you needing bridging course. At least to get to commerce you only need 25 in maths methods.

Currently doing triple major in Accounting, Finance and Economics. Most people doing Comm./ Eng take the finance major as it's the most complementary major. I actually would advise you to take finance as well. Finance is probably the best combination with an eng. degree because it's somewhat maths related (albeit less heavy math). Take economics major if you like the more qualitative side of things. I hate accounting, so i'm very biased. I really don't think you should do accounting major (unless you want to take it because it's a 'safety option'). It'd be great if you could tell me which part of commerce you're interested in.

From what I know you'll spend approx  5 - 6 years in the double degree. That's a long time, is that what you want?

Well, with the double I was already thinking of majoring in Finance and Civil Engineering. Despite loving Accounting 3/4 last year, I don't want to go into that field post-study, as those with experience have told me it's not very interesting and a tedious job which you can't really get out of. I have also been planning to go for my MBA after the required 3 years work experience.

If you're going for the MBA, why are you thinking of doing engineering? Why not just do the bachelor of commerce? Sure - it's nice to think "I'll do a double degree, then come out with TWO qualifications", but if you add the BE instead of, say, a bachelor of arts, you're adding TWO extra years instead of one, almost doubling your degree.
