Hi, for my school the chosen book to explore the topic of 'Encountering Conflict' for Year.12 is 'Every Man in this village is a liar' and I was just having some trouble understanding some of the terms used in the book, and google has confused me as well :/

So any help would be greatly appreciated!

1.)What/Who are the mujahideens?
2.) What/Who are the jihadists? Are the taliban against them?
3.) What/Who are warlords?

Thanks alot in advance! Sorry, I am so uneducated and unaware of all these terms and these issues in general :/

Hey, don't worry, I'm sure this is a very difficult text to those who don't have prior knowledge of the situation currently in Iraq/Israel.

1) The mujahideens, from what I gather, are the guerilla fighters in Islamist countries. In the book, Zaman (the warlord), is responsible for quite a few mujahideens and in that sense, he is their superior. In the context of our current army, the mujahideens is to Zaman as a normal enlisted officer is to a war general.

2) Jihadism from my understanding is just Islamist terrorism. Jihadists would be people who partake in those types of terrorist-like activities.

3) Warlords like Zaman are the people in charge of the mujahideens, just a tier or two up in the hierarchy (from my understanding, they are pretty much at the top of the pecking order).

a mujahid is a person who engages in jihad, as such mujahideen is the plural. these days most people just say jihadists or something because mujahideen became synonymous with the afghan taliban during the soviet war in afghanistan in the 80s

You are to an extent correct here but the concept of jihad is misunderstood by not only those who aren't Muslims but by Muslims themselves. Jihad in short means to struggle, struggle for a good cause. For example: You can perform an act of jihad against an evil act such as rape or theft by taking action. Doing this makes you mujahid.

I'll be the first to not only admit but complain that the aspect of Jihad has been taken completely out of context by a portion of the Islamic faith. It is actually a vital component of Islam but it isn't supposed to be used as a means to fight or carry out attacks on people. So technically speaking these people who are participating in what they think is Jihad is actually aren't.

If we're speaking in literal terms today, this century, right now then yes your definition is correct.

Just my 2cents, wanted to inform you and the OP on the real meaning of Jihad and Mujahideen. Haven't come across the term warlord yet though so I guess I've got something new to read up about tonight.

It's great to see someone correcting me, VCE should be a learning process for everyone! :)

No problems bud, but I really can't object against your answer. What might seem like generalization to me might be something that you read up about without finding the correct answers. :)
