Hey guys,

I really want to excel in english language as the whole 'english in the primary four' thing will fuck me up if I don't do well.

Any tips on SACs, exams and just general study?

Thanks  8) 8) 8)

Keep your eyes peeled for interesting ways language is used in the media, especially in news articles that involve social issues in Australia. No examiner enjoys reading the same and generic examples like "'LOL' reflects a belonging to social networking groups such as Facebook...." etc. They've probably read it at least 4396087436976 times in class discussions, practice essays, SACs and even exams. Using recent and original examples could be the big red flag that separates you from everyone else

For example, after that Sydney Siege incident the hashtag "#illridewithyou" started getting traction. Apparently it was BS but I wasn't keeping track ( :P), but I still think it would be a good example to have up your sleeve.

I heard from a friend that it might be a good idea to follow some notable Australian Icons on twitter,

Apparently this is a great way to achieve great quotes and recent examples to use in your essays and SACS. This will also come in handy for when we study Language variety in the Australian Society.

Small tip, but hope it helps :)

From my experience, English Language is not necessarily harder than English but requires more commitment and is more time consuming. Latin and Italian are foreign languages so they won't have anything to do with your EngLang studies unfortunately.

This. What are some actual notable Australians that would create useful examples?

There are tons of Australians to follow ranging from Comedians to Political Figures to News Editors which you can follow for examples. Dave Hughes and Carrie Bickmore use some very notable Australian Slang in their tweets while political figures such as Tony Abbott or Joe Hockey may use more formal language.

The idea behind it is that you are able to source very recent examples or contemporary texts of Australian Language in use. In terms of the people you follow it's endless.

Again, this is just a friend that suggested it to me on how to obtain some evidence and is only a small tip :3

Learn your metalanguage inside and out and never forget to use it!

Watch the news to pick up on contemporary Australian examples that'll differentiate your essays from others. Good luck :)

Here's my personal success tips!

From my personal experience, consistent and applied study will always get you the results you deserve. Every night you should be devoting some time to English Language study, even if you believe other subjects are more important.

Broaden your vocabulary! Learn new words and try to use them wherever possible! For example, the use of the word ‘lexeme’ has greater standing in English Language than ‘word’. Ideally, the broader your vocabulary, the higher the chance of you achieving exam success!

Don’t get fooled by thinking that English Language is easier than normal English – you still need to write cohesive, coherent and well thought-out essays.

Having a wide breadth of quotes for all topics is very important – unique quotes will make you stand out.

Understanding all the subsystems and the metalanguage of each subsystem will ensure you do well in the SACs and exam.

Even if you are not passionate about English Language, try to find something that you enjoy about it – it just makes it so much easier to study if you have a likeable reason to do so. For example, you may enjoy writing, so weave that enjoyment for writing into your essays.
