Marketing: Monash vs RMIT

Hi ATAR Notes members,

I'm a current Year 12 student interested in studying marketing next year at university.

I was wondering, which university is better for marketing - Monash (Bachelor of Business with a Marketing major) or RMIT (Bachelor of Business Applied Marketing)?

Seems to me that Monash is better in terms of:

-reputation (Group of Eight university)
-more active Marketing Students Society that I'd like to join
-ability to undertake a second major (I'd probably choose Human Resources Management) which provides more employment options
-International Marketing Study Program which sounds unreal

However RMIT has the advantage in that it has:

-1 year work experience placement during third year
-City location
-Debating Club (I'd have to go to the Clayton campus to debate at Monash)

Does anyone have any experience studying marketing at either university, or that of friends and relatives? Are there any other universities I should consider? Note that I can't get into UniMelb because I don't do maths methods, I do further maths.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

which university is better for marketing - Monash (Bachelor of Business with a Marketing major) or RMIT (Bachelor of Business Applied Marketing)?

In terms of course content and difficulty etc., they would probably be quite similar (I haven't studied at RMIT, but when I did first year marketing as part of my degree at Monash I had a tutor who had tutored at RMIT and he didn't think there was much difference in terms of what you learn. It looks like RMIT is projecting itself as more practical, but I'm not sure on how true that is, hard to know without transferring between the two uni's )

Monash is go8, although a work placement in 3rd year might actually be seen as quite an advantage by employers. It's true that the Monash marketing students society at Caulfield is quite big and active though, it would be one of the biggest (maybe the biggest) societies on the campus, and it seemed reasonably well-organised when I was there a few years ago. A second major is definitely an advantage - in HS it's pretty hard to know what you want to do, a lot of people change their minds, change majors, uni's etc. so that's quite useful, definitely an advantage over RMIT if you can't do a 2nd major there...

One big advantage of RMIT (at least I think) would be the city location, although that depends on where you live obviously. Having visited RMIT a couple of times I don't think there's much difference in campus life to Monash Caulfield, but you do have a better location in terms of restaurants, bars etc. Caulfield is ok in terms of restaurants (see thread on Monash Caulfield) but obviously more limited than a city location.

PS: Wouldn't worry too much about Melbourne Uni commerce for a marketing major anyway, doing a bachelor of business or Marketing will mean less irrelevant units (usually Commerce degrees will mean you have a take a couple more stats/finance i.e. 'mathsy' subjects).

Thanks for your reply Rohmer! That's the main thing that I'm weighing up - Monash's reputation vs the work experience component of RMIT. RMIT has something like a finance, marketing and economics society so I could also get involved with that. The location isn't an issue for me because I can catch public transport to RMIT and Caulfield from my house, and will be getting my P plate license in April next year when I turn 18.

Good to know that I don't have to do the more quantitative subjects... further maths is my least favourite subject.

We'll Id say you will have to do at least 3 quantitative units at Monash. Business stats, marketing research methodsand marketing decision analysis are all compulsory. (haven't done mda)
I know a graduate in marketing from rmit in marketing and they are finding it hard to find a job as rmit disn't have much access for support or placements, probably changed now. Also Monash does have the marketing internship unit

Thanks for your reply CH3ezEC4KE! Good to know about the marketing internship. How have you been finding studying marketing at Monash so far? Does the university assist the students with internship opportunities and help them with networking?

Yeah marketing is definitely good, a lot better than management. However I'm not really a maths/analytical person, so am struggling with marketing research methods atm, and will probably struggle with MDA from what I've heard, but the people are good, tutors are good, and the work is overall interesting and enjoyable. I'm not too sure about assisting students as I haven't really been looking into it yet because I still have 3 years to go, but they are good with networking events, especially if you join the monash marketing society. There's also marketing study tours that you can do etc which are pretty cool. I got invited to one in china this year for a few weeks, and they do pay some of it, but it is expensive. But yeah, monash is good.

Mathematics isn't my forte either.... but I'm confident I'll be able to get a 25 in further to get into Monash's marketing course. I'll worry about uni maths when I cross that bridge lol.

It's good to know that you've been finding studying at Monash so far an enjoyable experience. I do intend to join the marketing student's society. I've also heard about the study tours - they sound phenomenal! The international one in particular looks amazing.

Another question (sorry for the bombarding!) I was wondering - is Marketing and Human Resource Management weird to major in? I'm currently interested in both majors.

Thanks for the reply :)

Yeah 25 isn't too bad, should get that even if you don't study, like I didn't haha.

They will definitely boost up your resume etc.

Nah not too weird, I know a few people doing it. The good thing is that you can use your electives to do it as well, so you can still be there 3 years and end up with the double major. I didnt choose human resource management as a unit, but it's pretty good apparently, particularly if you are strong at oral presentations. You'll probably be finishing your degree the year I do, so might even be in some of my marketing units lol, cutting down to 3 units

Oral presentations are my favourite types of assessments for school. I live for making speeches and doing presentations.

Haha, maybe, let's hope I get into Monash first! That would be cool :)

Thanks for all of your replies, they've been super helpful :)

Yeah monash is good, plus it's status in the go8 is a bonus as well. No worries!
