which university is better for marketing - Monash (Bachelor of Business with a Marketing major) or RMIT (Bachelor of Business Applied Marketing)?
In terms of course content and difficulty etc., they would probably be quite similar (I haven't studied at RMIT, but when I did first year marketing as part of my degree at Monash I had a tutor who had tutored at RMIT and he didn't think there was much difference in terms of what you learn. It looks like RMIT is projecting itself as more practical, but I'm not sure on how true that is, hard to know without transferring between the two uni's )
Monash is go8, although a work placement in 3rd year might actually be seen as quite an advantage by employers. It's true that the Monash marketing students society at Caulfield is quite big and active though, it would be one of the biggest (maybe the biggest) societies on the campus, and it seemed reasonably well-organised when I was there a few years ago. A second major is definitely an advantage - in HS it's pretty hard to know what you want to do, a lot of people change their minds, change majors, uni's etc. so that's quite useful, definitely an advantage over RMIT if you can't do a 2nd major there...
One big advantage of RMIT (at least I think) would be the city location, although that depends on where you live obviously. Having visited RMIT a couple of times I don't think there's much difference in campus life to Monash Caulfield, but you do have a better location in terms of restaurants, bars etc. Caulfield is ok in terms of restaurants (see thread on Monash Caulfield) but obviously more limited than a city location.
PS: Wouldn't worry too much about Melbourne Uni commerce for a marketing major anyway, doing a bachelor of business or Marketing will mean less irrelevant units (usually Commerce degrees will mean you have a take a couple more stats/finance i.e. 'mathsy' subjects).
