Questions about MHS

Hello,
I’m currently going my to attend Melbourne High this year. I have a few questions, some are worries.

My family isn’t that rich, I didn’t do a tutor or anything. Most of the people there I assume come from rich families, will I be singled out because of this?

This might sound egotistical, but I want to be the smartest there. I believe if I put in my hard work I can be. Though I only got two superiors. There has to be a person who got seven superiors, does this dictate that they will always be the smartest? That even hard work can’t close the gap because they are too smart or good at whatever they are at.

How does the ballroom dancing club work? I would like to know as I plan to join it with no prior experience.

Going back to the the first and second question, does them having tutors place an edge over me?

I want to try and join every club possible? Is it feasible?

Is the workload hard? Or easy to manage?

How often do we meet MacRob and how does it work?

Thank you to the people or person who answer my questions, especially my worries.

You won’t be singled out for not being rich. I don’t think people care too much about how rich you are.

Like any exam, the selective school entrance exam is an indicator of how well you performed on a single day and does not take into account various other factors. There is probably a small correlation between these results and your ATAR, but honestly I’ve seen people go from not doing that well in the entrance exam and then excelling in Melbourne High. If a person studies hard and effectively, then they will have a shot at being one of the top students.

Never even knew there was a ballroom dancing club.

People can do well with or without tuition. It all depends on the individual and probably the teacher they receive. I personally had English tutoring in VCE cause my teacher was renowned for his lack of teaching and his harsh marking. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have gotten tutoring if I received another teacher. So, it depends on circumstances, but people get insane scores without any tutoring.

Not feasible to join absolutely every club. It is feasible to join quite a few clubs.

In year 9 and 10, the workload is as hard as you make it. You could cruise by without doing much of the work or you could go for that academic award and try your hardest.

I’m pretty sure you don’t usually meet MacRob other than for extracurricular activities or the social.

There is very little correlation between how many superiors you get and how well you do in VCE unless at maybe 99.6+ . VCE is pretty much specifically designed to award hard work over talent. I only got 2 superiors and didn't get into Melb High (my brother did with more superiors) and ended up with a 99.25. My brother had all the same opportunities as me in VCE and did the same subjects etc,, but went to Melb High and didn't break 98 atar. He did however, do far better than me on the UMAT. Therefore, your superiors will not affect your ATAR as much as you think (or at all)

Workload, of course, depends on how well you want to do.

Melbourne High places a strong emphasis on clubs and extracurricular activities (hence the motto they publish on the website is 'more than just marks' as opposed to the motto they traditionally employed 'honour the work'). You will be given the opportunity to join plenty of clubs of types that you would never have experienced in your old school.

You will be given plenty of opportunities to meet MacRob. Since I don't go there I can't list all the separate opportunities you will be able to do so.

Unfortunately a lot of students at Melbourne High are displeased at their teachers. There are quite a few who refuse to put in the effort (note: zhen), and many as such, get tutors. However, tutors in my experience mainly only help by providing the motivation for you to get through a grueling VCE year by making sure you don't fall behind. There are plenty of notes and resources out there that if you utilise, you will not be at a significant disadvantage compared to your peers. In fact, I heard of a story of some migrant learning English in 2 years and completing vce with 99.90 atar with no tutoring. Therefore, everything is out for there to achieve. You just need to maintain your motivation, which is easier said than done :)

Thank you all for answering the questions. I think I can sleep at ease tonight.

I was wondering since we vote for captaincy’s is it a popularity contest?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but what do you mean by you can cruise by, without doing much of the work. What is required for the academic reward and how are the rewards handed out in general. Apart from speech night.

Still looking for someone who can answer the ballroom dancing club.

How would I get out of the mindset of wanting to be the smartest, because I have a feeling it’s going to be my downfall. Do I have to experience defeat first?

What teachers aren’t considered up to par compared to everyone else. How should I deal with it if I get them?

Sorry for asking so many questions

By that I meant that you could pass and meet all the requirements, but get average or below average grades. This way your workload would be way less. So, your workload basically depends on you.

MHS is all about what you personally make of it. Even if your dealt with a lot of obstacles during your journey, you should keep persevering to achieve your goals. Hard work goes a long way and even if you don't have the best teachers and no tutoring, you can still come out with great results. That being said being the 'smartest' at MHS is pretty much gonna be irrelevant once your their. Enjoy the friends you make and experiences you gain throughout your journey as they will be much more rewarding than a bunch of academic achievements.

Secc is spot on, sure go in aiming high, but it's honestly what you make of the school.

You can't really tell who is the "best" until ATARs are out and by then it will only matter in whether you got into your first pref.

Ballroom Dancing ran every Wednesday (2017) after school where MacRob and MHS turn up outside Memorial Hall.

That's all I know about it, I wasn't in it, my club was kicked out by them from Memorial hall. PM me and I can direct you to the MHS student that was running it last year.

Not at all. No one's really going to care about your financial status. If they do judge you based on that, they're just assholes.

I sat near the bottom of the cohort for the majority of my time at MHS. From personal experience I can say that hard work will equal to high marks. The amount of superiors you got mean absolutely nothing.

no idea :')

Kinda depends on how you work. Naturally someone having a tutor will mean that they have an edge over someone who doesn't. But there are also other factors including how hard you work vs how hard they work. Someone that has a tutor but doesn't work hard won't make it as far as somebody who works hard but has no tutor.

Sure.

It's not that much, like, throughout Junior school (year 9-10) the workload really isn't that high if you're organised.

Some clubs will meet with MacRob (like anime club). I think there are also events now and then during year 9 and 10 where you collaborate with the girls.
