Year 11 Oral Topic- Views

Hi All,

For my year 11 oral presentation I was thinking of having this as my contention:

Gender inequality is at the heart of domestic violence

Is this too simple for a year 11 oral? Should it be more complex at this stage?

Definitely not too simple, mate! Unless your teacher explicitly tells you that this topic isn't a good one, I'd go ahead and give it a shot. This one is undoubtedly falls under a topic you can get a lot out of, and the contention throws a good spin on it that you will be able to back up if you build your speech right.

Sounds fine to me, I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say. Gender equality and domestic violence are both pretty controversial, so there's heaps to talk about.

Neither gender inequality nor domestic violence is simple. I think you'll be fine.

That is a really interesting topic and is certainly not too simple!

However, I think you're being too specific with your topic. If i were you, I'd make my contention something like: "Domestic violence is a severe problem in Australia and it needs to be dealt with imminently"

Then, base your arguments off of causative factors such as:
1) gender inequality
2) lack of protective services
3) high unemployment (probs a bad example, but you get the jist)

As with all orals, offer up a brief solution towards the end of your speech.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for this advice. Yes, I agree, my contention is too specific and I was having trouble formulating my sub arguments.

This is much better.  :)
