So my friend just got rejected for a Monash med interview despite being on the deans rural list, having an atar of 99 and a UMAT of 80...on top of this she didn't even get a scholarship for biomed...
How is it that someone who did so well ends up in the exact same position as me I.e. Someone who bombed the UMAT and got a moderately-respectable ATAR..

What's even the point of getting a 99 atar aside from personal satisfaction lol
Monash should just come clean and say 99.5 for a scholarship or go home, 95 umat or jump off a bridge
#fuckthesystem

I'm probably gonna ragrets this in the morning oh wait it is morning  :P

I'm honestly a bit surprised they didn't score an interview, there must be a strong field of candidates this year.

You definitely don't need 95%ile to get in, plenty of people fit in lay year with less than that. As did I.

More often than not, Excellence scholarships are only awarded to those with ATARs in the mid-99s or higher, nothing wrong with the system, it's just how competitive things are these days.

This displays the amount of competition, based upon just getting an admission in Biomed (I am talking about UoM). I may need to work harder, than I expected :o

Thanks for the heads-up

Just out of curiosity, what's the lowest umat you know of someone that got into monash med? (or the avg for the lower bound of UMAT?)

About 60%ile. Rural person, must have smashed the interview and probably a once in a blue moon admission. Getting in with below about 85 is very rare, below 90 is rare, and 95 is what the cut-off used to be for interviews. That should be some guide on what to "aim" for if aiming is even possible with the UMAT.

80 UMAT, but really high ATAR

The key rule is 50, 50, 50 minimum for each section

For UMAT, I don't know what the current system is like given there was no 50 50 50 rules for UMAT in my year. Cut off for my year was 94%tile (non-rural students), so even the lowest non-rural bonded student needed to get 94%tile to get in.

If you are rural student, your UMAT can be lower. I know some people have low 80s for their UMAT and they are not bonded.

Because of being so competitive nowadays, you don't expect to see much difference between bonded and non-bonded groups. The only "advantage" is you being rural.
