It's definitely possible. I personally found unit 1/2 of HHD quite boring but 3/4 of HHD is quite interesting! There's not a lot in common between 1/2 and 3/4 except Health (PMS) but it goes further in depth in 3/4. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you, HHD 3/4 is amazing  ;D

Definitely possible. For me personally, the benefit of doing 1&2 was to understand key definitions - and as a result, I understood concepts better. However the textbook does go over these definitions again, so it's possible to pick it up from scratch.

Just wondering, what textbook are you referring to :o?

Any textbook will - Jacaranda Key Concepts, or Cambridge, or any other.

Basically: you won't miss much from not doing 1/2, but this is what you will have to catch up on:
Definitions:
- health
- physical health
- mental health
- social health
- health status
- life expectancy
- health adjusted life expectancy
- burden of disease
- DALY
- morbidity
- mortality
- under-five mortality rate
- prevalence
- incidence
See Definitions You Should Know for definitions of these.  Before the year starts, you should aim to understand what each definition means, and know it somewhat near word-for-word.  Don't worry, the rest of the course isn't this definition-y :)

Plus some examples of the determinants of health (i.e. factors that influence how healthy we are) and how they influence our health, in these four categories:
- biological (to do with the body)
- behavioural (to do with our actions/choices, what we do)
- social (society and social interactions and socioeconomic status etc.)
- physical environment (the physical world round us)
VCE (2014): HHD, Bio, English, T&T, Methods

Uni (2021-24): Bachelor of Nursing @ Monash Clayton

Work: PCA in residential aged care

Hi bangali_lok, I'm also doing 3/4 HHD next year without 1/2. I'm just wondering if there are any official definitions for physical health, mental health, social health and mortality? They weren't listed on the link you provided. I just want to be sure before I go and find an incorrect definition. Thanks in advance for all the help :) !

Sure!  They're probably in the thread but I have my notes open currently anyway, so here goes copy-paste:

> Physical health: relates to the efficient functioning of the body and its systems, and includes physical capacity to perform tasks and physical fitness.

> Social health: being able to interact with others and participate in the community in both an independent and cooperative way.

> Mental health: state of wellbeing in which an individual recognizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to their community.

> Mortality: the number of deaths caused by a disease, illness or other environmental factor

Wow, I replied fast ;D

wow, thanks for a fast reply. I'm just wondering, does physical health = physical dimensions of health and so on?

Yes.  Physical health = physical dimensions of health and so on, but don't mix this up with physical/social determinants of health, which are different.  They're the factors that decide how healthy we are. :)

Quicker reply than normal again (I'm searching and using stuff in the site currently so keep refreshing, that's how).

First time replying on Atarnotes!!! XD
Just assuring you again, I'm doing HHD now (going to have my trial exam today...) and I didn't do it last year--I didn't even do Health before VCE--I'm not too sure exactly what that one's about, but everyone in my school did it unless they were in the class that chose to do Latin, which is me :)

Having abandoned all science subjects as soon as I had the choice (no I didn't actually fail any of them), I mostly chose HHD just because I had to choose a subject and it seemed easier than my other options, and would also be a change of style to the rest of my subjects.
I spent a lot of Units 1&2 complaining about the whole subject, but Units 3&4 are actually quite interesting, and you start to see how things from 1&2 do actually connect.

I've been doing pretty well in SACs etc, and my general comment would be that there's nothing particularly difficult about HHD, but you just need to put in the time and study it (more so than subjects where you can sort of depend on performance on the actual day, if that makes any sense?)

You'll be fine taking up Units 3&4, plus you've got atarnotes XD
I wish I found this website earlier in the year! All the best!

Cool to hear that you're enjoying the subject, great to hear those supportive words to people picking up HHD 3/4, and welcome to AN :))  All the best with your trials, and we look forward to your questions and contributions!

You will be totally fine! I really wanted to do HHD 1&2 but it clashed with Methods so I had to go straight into HHD 3&4. Just get yourself familiarised with the health status indicators (morbidity, mortality, DALY, Burden of Disease, Mortality, Under-5 mortality, Incidence, Prevalence, etc) and the dimensions of health (physical, mental, social) - these are really straightforward concepts so it's barely anything extra that you'll need to know for 3&4. All the best, you'll be awesome! :D

At my school they don't even offer 1/2 and we had most of the H&HD class of 2015 in top 10% of the state for exams 🏼🏼 persistence and study will get you what you want !
