*** GENDER DIFFERENCES IN LANGUAGE ***

Hey guys!

Part of being successful in Unit 4 AOS 2 is knowing the differences in language between the two genders. In fact, in my opinion Unit 4 AOS 2 is the shortest AOS and most students comment that content studied in this AOS has already been learnt before. This leaves the topic of ‘gender differences’ as one of the key themes and areas that may present some difficulty in understanding.

You would be studying this now in school, so what better than to post this to you now!

Today, I’ll be summarising the key differences in language between the two genders. It must be noted, however, that these are GENERAL observations with intriguing claims, and at times this may not prove to be accurate. This is an area of study that still requires more research, and so I highly recommend that you devote time to researching these differences online.

Thanks :)
Dmitri

What's also interesting is the gendered used of language in describing people.

For example, has anybody noticed a difference in the ways that Donald Trump has been described compared with Hillary Clinton? Like this article, for example, is interesting:

Spoiler
We have deep, deep divisions in this country, and boosting women's political power and engagement may be the best route to healing them. This is more than demonstrating women can be leaders, it's also about making "women's issues" like gender pay equity, health care equality, and family leave policies, visible & important for everyone--men included.

Really, it all comes down to the double bind of female politicians. In a terrain that is stereotypically 'masculine', they have to demonstrate sufficient levels of both 'masculinity' and 'femininity', whatever they are. It's super interesting; I'm happy to speak with anybody about this for hours on end haha.
