Which English should I choose? Eng Lang help please as well!!

I want to get some advice about choosing my English subjects.  :)

Should I choose two Englishes for year 11?
If so, which combination should I do out of English, English Language and literature??

For anyone out there doing English Language- is it really hard??? I suppose you can now see clearly with your study scores ;D
What exactly is the course about? I know its like looking into how language works and stuff, but seriously, what do you have to do in the exam?
Is there lots to memorise?
Is it easier than physics?  :P

Any advice or tips would be great!  :)

For a combination.. I'd say that English Language and Literature would go well together.

As for what English language is about, check this: http://vce.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,1210.0.html

You should check this thread I made also: http://vce.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,29343.0.html

I think English Language would be good. It wasn't offered at my school, so I couldn't do it.

Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

There's also a case for English and Literature. Literature students are really receptive to the devices an author uses to convey ideas and they can do well in Reading and Responding, especially for responses looking at structure. And of course, they have an advantage with Language Analysis as well.

English Language seems really interesting. They look at some really cool topics like pronunciation.

But sundayrose - two English subjects could be very demanding unless you have an appetite for writing, reading and language analysis. English and Literature would be a stressful combination unless you love arts  unconditionally :)

I'm basically tossing up between a second English (i.e. Lit or Eng Lang) or physics...
Any thoughts between what is easier out of Eng Lang, Lit or Physics?

Lit is harder than Eng Lang I would say but my opinion is not the most authoritative here b/c I've never done Eng Lang, and Lit only in a minor capacity. Have not done Physics either but whether it is harder/easier depends on how well you think you can go, it is quite hard.

Hi Sundayrose,

I was sort of in your predicament a year but instead of physics, I was wondering whether I should go with 2 englishes or do 3/4 PE.

I ended up doing English and english language in the end. It's an uncommon English combination out of all the combinations mentioned before and I only know 4 other people in my year level who are following through with 3/4 English and English language. Nevertheless, I enjoyed both subjects and can't really decide which I like better. I like English for it's flexibility and the creativity element in the context section. While with English language, I liked the structure and learning all the language used to describe and analyze texts as well as how language plays important role in society.

Now most people pick english either because it's the one they're most comfortable with because of the similarity to year 7-10 English or it's their only option. But if you're doing Englang or lit, keep in mind that you'll need to learn how to write the essays correctly so there might be some extra work here. Whereas with English you're just building off skills you learned in year 7-10.

But since you're in year 11, luckily you have time to experiment. I suggest that if you're not that keen on doing two englishes you should do Englang and physics. If aver unit one, you hate either Englang or physics, you can always transfer to normal English

If you're artys do lit, if you're scientific/mathematical do eng. lang, if you're anything else do english...

Or do english and literature and feel like you're getting a free ride in english. Yay.

Pretty much what Chris said. I did all three English classes this year (Literature, English and English Language) and it was perfectly fine. I did get rid of Lit going into Year12, only two English classes can count towards your top four. I'd personally go with EL and English, but if you enjoy Lit then mix it up.
