I read kurrymuncher's thread and it sparked some curiosity of my own. So instead of hi-jacking his thread I thought I would make my own thread, using his post as a template because im lazy. the underlines are where i have changed his template   ;D

hey guys, the deadlines for uni preferences are coming closer, and Im starting to stress

I want to do Commerce at Monash (probably finance major), but I have this urge to also do a bachelor of economics and major in econometrics.

If I chose to do a double degree with Economics, would there be any major benefits?

Im still deciding whether I should just do Commerce, or do both........Im so confused

Also, there never seem to be many people interested in the Economics/Commerce double degree .......Is monash's bachelor of Economics not great or something? Do you know anyone doing it?

thanks guys

Economics as a whole generally has a very scarce major rate as opposed to areas like marketing and accounting. So no, it has nothing to do with Economics being bad at Monash, I'd say the opposite.

You could just do BCom and double-major in finance and econometrics...

BCom offers all the majors that BEco does... BEco, your choice of majors is limited to either 'economics' or 'econometrics and business statistics'.
The advantage of BEco is that up to half (??) of your units may be taken from outside of your discipline (something like that anywayz...).

Hmmm.. Interesting. I'm keen on doing 'breadth', does the double major limit my ability to take subjects outside the faculty?

I just looked it up.. BEco allows you to do up to 8 units of your degree outside of the faculty (up to 1/3 of the degree). Although with the double degree (BCom/BEc), you can still choose 8 units outside of the faculty - form a major, and get both degrees.
