Chemistry 3/4 without 1/2?

Before i did not really have a idea of what course i was to do in uni but now medicine seems like a good path to go down in uni but you require chemistry for that so would doing 3/4 chem without 1/2 be insanely difficult for me? I didn't pick chem in yr10 so the last time i did any chem was in yr 9 and i'm worried it'll affect my other subjects if i do end up picking chem.

Hmm well if that's the course you want you really don't have any choice so any impact it has on your other subjects is moot imo. In general there are a few topics from 1/2 chem (definietly learn these early) which is needed for 3/4 chem but definitely not everything so definitely possible to succeed in when motivated. I've known a few people who didn't do 1/2 chem and it didn't really impact them too much apart form some work over the holidays.

If you're in year 11 could you pick up unit 2 chem?

i'm in year 11 and i'm doing 5 1/2 subjects and 1 3/4 subjects and i dont wish to drop any of my subjects to pick up chem. In year 12 though i am able to pick up 3/4 chem so i'll end up doing 7 vce subjects.

My subjects right now
- English (mainstream)
- Bio
- Physics
- Methods
- Specialist
- Software Development (3&4)

I'm just worried that because i havent done 1/2 most of my time would be dedicated to chem and so i wont have time to study for subjects like specialist or methods.
Is there any way i can look at what concepts in 1/2 will crossover to 3/4 so i can study a little bit of chem beforehand to prepare myself?

Have a look at the study design which I've linked it contains all the topics which are covered in units 1-4.
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vce/chemistry/ChemistrySD-2016.pdf

If you put some effort during the holidays to cover the basic concepts (periodic table/mole/organic chem to name a few) you'll be fine.

At my school they don't actually let anyone start chem even at unit 2 without a holiday bridging class, and they definitly wouldn't let us pick up chem 3/4 (note they let people pick up basically every other subject except methods at 3/4 too so its not a blanket rule). There is A LOT of content which crosses over, and even if it isn't on the 3/4 course, the vast majority of the 1/2 content is build upon and is required as background concepts. I love chemistry, it's my favourite subject but i would not cope with picking it up 3/4 especially with the other subjects.

To be honest, maybe you could drop bio unit 2 and then pick it back up 3/4, not much content from unit 2 in bio is in 3/4 at all so if the blocking works that would be a good idea.
Also it would maybe work with spesh as i'm picking that up now, as all the 1/2 content is explained from scratch in the 3/4 course.
Hope that helps :)

similar to bell but good luck op, my chem teacher who teaches the 1/2 and 3/4 class said that sometimes there's no time to go over the same concept again thoroughly and you should have remembered/learnt it in the previous year for example conversions
