Does Memorizing Essays Help

Hey Guys,
I recently saw an English teacher for help with writing within time constraints and she encouraged me to memorize some key paragraphs on some themes and even some essays so during SAC time I can just write without the need to constantly think. I was just wondering whether or not this is an effective method to obtain a high scoring essay.

Depends on how you use them in the essay. If you just them in plonk it word-for-word memorised, probably not, but if you modify them so that they fit in with the prompt and the rest of your essay (and provided that they're high-scoring in the first place), yeah - it's a pretty effective way of getting a high score.

memorising paragraphs/ideas is alright if you want especially for the important themes and characters but no real reason to memorise full essays since it's unlikely you'll get the same prompt (even "similar" prompts will have some important distinctions)

I agree with sdfg and Sine.

While it is fine to memorise certain paragraphs (orientated around a specific idea), you need to know them well enough, so as to effectively manipulate them. I would not, however, encourage you to memorise introductions or conclusions. These need to authentically correlate to the primary concern of the prompt. When examiners have a few hundred essays to get through, they usually already have your mark in mind by the end of the intro.

All the best :)
